Championship Title – Who Are The Favourites?

The race will be on for promotion from the very start, but to add a cherry atop the icing, fans will want their team to win the Championship title too. Here are the three favourites to do just that.

West Ham United

Tottenham may have avoided the ignominy of a famous relegation, but it was only slightly less shocking that West Ham went down in their stead. A poor campaign from the outset saw Nuno Espirito Santo unable to save the Hammers from a first season outside of the top flight for 15 years. In that campaign, 2011/12, they came straight back up having also been relegated the previous season, and with Espirito Santo and Jarrod Bowen among the key names staying, there is every chance a swift return to the Premier League will be earned.

Wolves

After eight full seasons in the Premier League, during which they even qualified for Europe, Wolves return to the Championship in a low mood. A dismal league campaign saw them accrue just 20 points last term and the feeling around the club is poor. Dismay at their chairman’s decisions only increased when Rob Edwards was unexpectedly sacked, replaced by the unheralded César Peixoto. Nevertheless, a squad with plenty of top flight experience remains which could settle the ship before a promotion charge.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough became the first Championship side ever to experience playoff heartbreak twice in 2025/26. Firstly, they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Southampton, only to earn a reprieve when the Saints were kicked out due to the Spygate scandal. Alas, Wembley hoodoo kicked in again for Boro, as Hull City stunned them 1-0 to consign them to another season in the Championship. Middlesbrough are vastly experienced at contending in the Championship now though and will firmly believe this can be their year.

Championship Promotion Contenders & Dark Horses

With extra places available in the playoffs in 2026/27, there is no shortage of depth to the Championship promotion race. These dark horses will also believe they can go up automatically, or fend their way through the extended playoff format.

Burnley

Burnley fans are used to this by now. For the sixth successive season, the Clarets begin their campaign in a different division. The ultimate yo-yo club, they suffered their third successive relegation from the Premier League when in the top flight, but having been promoted both time from the Championship in between, faith will be strong that yet another promotion bid can be successful. Ex-Genk manager Nicky Hayen was an unexpected appointment, but he inherits a squad with knowhow.

Southampton

The Saints went marching in illegally last season. Tonda Eckert’s spies caused outrage in the spring, causing Southampton to be unceremoniously booted from the playoffs wile incurring a four-point deduction to begin the 2026/27 campaign. That will ensure they are bottom after the opening weekend regardless of the result, but Eckert’s men really got rolling at the end of last season. They will be determined to prove their form was purely due to on-the-pitch graft rather than off-the-pitch antics.

Birmingham City

If any club can Hail Mary themselves up the Championship table it is Birmingham City. Tom Brady’s money and magnitude can only take the Blues so far, but they ended the previous season unbeaten in five games. Signings have been made across Europe, including the exciting acquisition of Jhon Solis from Girona as they look to shrewdly sneak their way into promotion contention this term.

Other Championship Betting Markets

As well as betting on the title race in the Championship, or on in-game markets, you can bet on the following outright options, with the Championship offering a greater array than the Premier League.

Championship Promotion Odds

If you fancy a team to get promoted but do not want to take the risk of them needing to finish top, you can back purely on promotion markets for teams in the Championship. For the likes of West Ham and Wolves, this offers greater security, albeit at shorter odds.

Championship Relegation Odds

At the other end of the table, three teams will be relegated come the season’s end. Lincoln City are 150/1 for the Championship title after their League One heroics last year, and are odds-on favourites for the drop. Fellow promoted sides Cardiff City and Bolton are also among the favourites to return back down, while Charlton and Preston are among the established sides set to struggle.

Championship Top Goalscorer Odds

Some big names will feature in the Championship this season. Jarrod Bowen remains faithful to West Ham and is favourite to bag some due returns in the second tier. Raul Jimenez, meanwhile, is back at Wolves after scoring thrice for Mexico at the World Cup. The marksman managed three double-figure returns as a Premier League striker. Norwich’s Mo Toure and Middlesbrough’s Will Lankshear should also bag plenty across the 46-game season.
