Dave Young’s Day 4 Tips

Cheltenham Day 4 Races

Day four is the most anticipated of the Cheltenham Festival, with the Cheltenham Gold Cup the feature race on the card. Once again, there are seven races, with three Grade 1s and two of the most competitive handicaps of the entire week.

Triumph Hurdle

Day 4 opens with the Triumph Hurdle. This is the Grade 1 championship for juveniles (horses aged four), who are at the beginning of their jumps careers.

County Hurdle

This race is usually a blur of action, not just because of the speed over the shortest trip, but because it often houses the joint biggest field at the Festival (26 runners). Some of the biggest handicap gambles have been landed here in recent years, so watch out for any runners subject to strong market support.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle directly precedes the big one. It is also usually contested by horses whose future aim is the Gold Cup.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Gold Cup itself takes place in the centre of the card. Run over an often gruelling 3m2f, it is the utmost test of stamina, jumping and bravery at the Festival.

Hunter Chase

The Hunter Chase, the third and final race for amateur riders, takes place after the Gold Cup over the same course. It is the most prestigious race of its nature in Britain.

Mares’ Chase

The newest race on the card, the Mares’ Chase has its place as the penultimate race of the Festival.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

The Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle for conditional jockeys is the final contest. In the past, some big names have been unleashed from down the pecking order of their respective stables.

On Day 4 of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, known as Gold Cup Day, several trends emerge for each race. In the JCB Triumph Hurdle, historical data reveals that 23 of the last 30 winners triumphed in their previous race, with Irish-trained horses dominating recent editions. Notably, French-bred horses have secured a significant number of places in recent runnings. Trainer Nicky Henderson boasts an impressive record with seven wins, while Willie Mullins and Rich Ricci have clinched the last two victories. Moving to the BetMGM County Handicap Hurdle, a trend to consider is the success of horses finishing in the top 3 in their previous outing. Trainers Jonjo O’Neill and Willie Mullins have shown prowess in this race, while certain horse profiles, like ex-flat horses and 5-year-olds, have struggled historically.

In the prestigious Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, key trends include winners typically running in top-tier races like the Savills Chase or King George earlier in the season. The majority of victors have been Grade 1 winners and had limited experience over fences. Irish-bred horses have had significant success, with a strong correlation between Festival form and Gold Cup triumphs. Additionally, favorites have fared well historically, with a notable trend being that most winners had secured at least one victory during the current season.

Cheltenham Festival Day 4 Betting Tips

Patience is the key on Day 4. The head of the market remains the place to look, particularly in 2022 as four of the races saw the favourite come out on top, including the Gold Cup with A Plus Tard running out an impressive winner. Things were a little different in 2023 though, with just two favourites being first past the post on Day 4, although one of those in Galopin Des Champs did win the big race.

The Triumph Hurdle and the Albert Bartlett are often the trickiest novice events in terms of form study, with little evidence for the former and the stamina test of the latter sometimes blowing previous efforts out the window.
