Andrew Mount’s Gold Cup Tips
Andrew Mount has two darts to fire at the Gold Cup. He thinks Jango Baie should relish the Gold Cup test, having an unbeaten Cheltenham record, while Grey Dawning may be the forgotten horse at an each-way price.
Matty Sutcliffe’s Gold Cup Tips
The Gold Cup can go the way of Haiti Couleurs according to Matty Sutcliffe. He is an old-fashioned chaser, who can win a below par edition of the race.

The Jukebox ManAll About The Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2027
Sponsored by Boodles for the second successive year, the Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place over an extended 3m2f of Prestbury Park. A Grade 1 chase, with 22 fences to be jumped in all, the race is considered the premium chase at the Cheltenham Festival and is a race that every Jockey, Trainer and Owner dreams of winning.
Inothewayuthinkin beat Galopin Des Champs in the race last season, and with the latter ruled out then the Irish raider will be the only former winner lining up. Gaelic Warrior has been a real top class performer for Willie Mullins and will be the sole candidate for Willie Mullins, whilst last year’s Arkle hero Jango Baie spearheads the British charge for Nicky Henderson. The Jukebox Man won the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and is another class act in a race awash with quality.

Cheltenham Gold Cup History
The Cheltenham Gold Cup is one of the most famous horse races in the world and therefore has a rich history with a roll of honour that is both a human and equine who’s who of Jumps racing.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup was first run as a Jumps race in 1924 and a prize of £685 was awarded to connections of the winner, Red Splash. The race was switched to the New Course in 1959, where it has remained ever since.
It received commercial sponsorship for the first time in 1972 courtesy of Piper Champagne. In the years since the race has been sponsored by the likes of the Tote, Betfred, Timico and Magners.
One of the most famous early winners of the race was Golden Miller, who took five straight renewals from 1932 to 1936 – a feat that due to the competitiveness of modern horse racing is unlikely to ever be beaten.
Legendary Irish trainer Vincent O’Brien sent out Cottage Rake to win three straight renewals from 1948-1950, yet the race enjoyed something of a golden period in the 1960s, in no small part thanks to the exploits of the legendary Arkle. He was sent out to win three straight renewals from 1964-1966 and such was his popularity he was just 1/10F for the last of those, making him the shortest priced winner in the race’s history.
Previous to Arkle’s three victories, trainer Tom Dreaper had taken the 1946 renewal with Prince Regent and post-Arkle went on to land the race in 1968 with Fort Leney. His five winners make him the race’s most successful trainer, whilst Arkle’s Jockey Pat Taaffe was also aboard for that Fort Leney success and his four race wins make him the most successful Cheltenham Gold Cup rider.
Trainer Michael Dickinson managed to train the first five home in 1983, and three years later, the mare Dawn Run became the first horse to complete the Champion Hurdle – Cheltenham Gold Cup double, a feat that is yet to be matched.
Desert Orchid took the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and a year later, 100/1 shot Norton’s Coin caused a huge upset when running out the race’s 3/4l winner. He remains the biggest priced winner of the Gold Cup.
One of the most famous recent winners was Best Mate, who took three successive renewals from 2002-2004, all victories coming under rider Jim Culloty, who went on to train 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere.
Kauto Star (2007, 2009) was one of the race’s more popular winners and remains the only horse to win the Gold Cup, lose it, and then win it back again. However, two more dual winners have emerged since Kauto and both were trained by Willie Mullins: Al Boum Photo claimed the 2019 and 2020 renewals back-to-back, but Galopin Des Champs could even land three if able to regain his title in 2026.
