Glorious Goodwood concludes on Saturday 1st August, with the Stewards’ Cup one of the feature races of the day. The 6f sprint handicap will see a huge field take their chance in the line-up, with it set to be one of the best betting heats of the week.
Dave Young helps to point you in the right direction of the winner of that race and the rest of the Goodwood Day 5 action, as he takes a look at all the trends.
Coral Summer Handicap (Class 2) – 1m6f
Day 5 kicks off with a long-distance handicap which has the Johnston name on the trainers’ honour roll 5 times from the last 11 renewals. Son Charlie Johnston took this in 2024 to follow in his father’s footsteps and you’d expect them to target something at this race each year. The last 7 winners have all been fancied and sent off 15/2 or shorter but the prior 4 were all double figures so this race isn’t devoid of a shock.
- ALL of the last 10 winners had 3 or more runs that season
- ALL of the last 10 winners either won or failed to even place last time out
- 8 of the last 10 winners last ran in a Handicap
- 7 of the last 10 winners had an OR of 95+
- 7 of the last 10 winners ran 22 days ago or less
- 7 of the last 10 winners were sent off 15/2 or shorter
“Has 3+ runs this season and either won or failed to even place last time out. Last raced in a handicap and 22 days ago or less. Preferably holds and OR of at least 95”
Glorious Stakes (Group 3) – 1m4f
The first Group race on the final day of Glorious Goodwood see a race taken by William Haggas for the last 3 years and he also took this back in 2020 too. Favourites perform above expectation and are profitable blind so it really would be a shock result to see the winner of this sent off a price outside of single-figures.
- ONLY one clear favourite has finished outside the top 2
- 9 of the last 10 winners finished top 3 last time out (last 4 won)
- 9 of the last 10 winners were sent off 9/2 or shorter
- 9 of the last 10 winners had run at 12 furlongs (8 had won)
- 9 of the last 10 winners had been beaten that season
- 9 of the last 10 winners ran within the last 6 weeks
“HUGE respect to favourites and will not be priced bigger than 9/2. Placed Top 3 last time out, has run and won at 12f, has lost this season and raced within the last 6 weeks” won. Has 2 or more runs this season but not in the last 3 weeks and has 1-3 career wins. Respect lower drawn horses. Has 2 or more runs, respect favourites and likely to come from Ascot or Newmarket last time out”
Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) – 1m6f
The feature race of Day 5 sees the ladies to the fore and there’s been a blend of coming-of-age 3yo performance and dominance from the elders. One thing for sure, it’ll be a cracker of a race, and it’ll always take a good one to win this.
- ALL of the last 10 winners had run that season
- 8 of the last 10 winners last ran between 21 and 42 days ago
- 8 of the last 10 winners came from the top 3 in the betting (5 favourites)
- 7 of the last 10 winners had won that season
- 6 of the last 10 winners won last time out
“Has run this season and probably last ran 21 to 42 days ago. Has won this season and ideally won last time out. Likely to come from the Top 3 in the betting with the favourites performing well.”d didn’t win last time out”
Coral Stewards’ Cup (Class 2) – 6f
One of the most anticipated races of the week and arguably the biggest interest for most punters on Day 5 is the Stewards’ Cup. A massive field handicap, often with the maximum 28 runners lining up to sprint their way through 6-furlongs and high draws have been favoured although the trio of exceptions from the last 11 years have come from the lowest 4 stalls. Securing a clear run is essential, which is probably why the wings are probably the place to be.
- ALL of the last 10 winners had run 3 or more times that season
- 9 of the last 10 winners had won that season
- 8 of the last 10 winners were drawn in stall 15 or higher (others in 3 and 4)
- 7 of the last 10 winners had an OR of 101+
- 7 of the last 10 winners last ran 23 days ago or fewer
“Has at least 3 runs this season, has won this season and last ran 23 days ago or less. Ideally rated 101 or higher and preference to those drawn in the top half or the lowest 4 stalls” in a race and be priced no bigger than 8/1. Look to those who last ran between 20 and 42 days ago”
Phase Eight Handicap (Class 2) – 7f – (NO RACE 2023)
A race that’s changed named this year has a fair profile to it and it’s a pretty decent standard set by winners too. They’re winners through their career, they run in decent company and they’re adept at running well at this trip.
- 9 of the last 10 winners last ran in a Class 3 or better
- 8 of the last 10 winners had 2 or more career wins
- 8 of the last 10 winners carried between 8-9 and 9-4
- 8 of the last 10 winners ran at 7f last time out
- 8 of the last 10 winners had won that season
- 7 of the last 10 winners had 4 or more runs that season
“Will have run in a Class 3 or better last time out, has 2 or more career wins including a win this season. Carries 8-9 to 9-4 ran at 7f last time out and ideally has 4 or more runs this season”ing from the John Smiths Cup who also ran at Royal Ascot and have 3 runs since May and races prominently”
Maiden Stakes (Class 2) – 7f – (NO RACE 2023 – DEAD HEAT IN 2024)
The penultimate race of Glorious Goodwood is a Maiden stakes which has seen Andrew Balding to the fore in 3 of the last 5 renewals and experience at this 7 furlong trip is preferable, as it already having run to a fair standard. A dead heat in 2024 brings the last 10 renewals trends to 11 winners but there are still come patterns to be seen, even despite the unexposed nature of runners in this race.
- 8 of the last 11 winners had run that season
- 8 of the last 11 winners came from the top 3 in the betting
- 6 of the last 8 winners who had run, last ran at 7 furlongs
- 6 of the last 8 winners who had run, posted at least a 79 RPR
- 3 of the last 5 winners were trained by Andrew Balding
“Probably has raced before and at 7 furlongs with an RPR of 79 or higher. Comes from the Top 3 in the betting and respect Andrew Balding runners” in a Class 4 or 5 race. Has already run at 7f, preferably has won at 7f and at least placed last time out”
Coral Handicap (Class 3) – 1m1f – (NO RACE 2023)
The closing race of Glorious Goodwood comes in the form of a 9-furlong Handicap which, being the ‘getting out stakes’, has kindly found most winners at a single-figure price.
- ALL of the last 10 winners ran 21 days ago or more
- 9 of the last 10 winners ran in a Handicap last time out
- 8 of the last 10 winners were sent off a single-figure price
- 7 of the last 10 winners finished top 3 last time out
- 4 of the 5 horses who had run at 9-furlongs has won at 9-furlongs too
“Last ran 21 days ago or more and in a Handicap. Sent off single figures, placed Top 3 last time out and if has run at 9f before now is expected to have won at 9f too” Top 2 in a Class 3 or better race. Holds and OR of 86 or higher and hopefully has already won this season”
