First Time Headgear Today
There are various types of headgear used by Trainers to try and optimise or improve a horse’s performance in a race. Knowing which horses are running in first time headgear can be useful for punters as it can indicate that a horse is ready to run a really big race and the Trainer wants to make sure the horse is fully concentrated at the job in hand or alternatively it could simply be a tactic to try and turn a horse’s bad form around. The table above shows the horses running for the first time in headgear today allowing you to easily see a list of horses who could improve for the fitting of these pieces of tack.
First Time Blinkers Today
Blinkers are semi-circled cups fitted to a horse’s eyes to make sure it focuses on what is going on ahead rather than behind. The idea is to keep the horse concentrated on winning the race and to not get distracted by other horses or what is going on in the stands or elsewhere off the racecourse.
First Time Visor Today
Visors are like blinkers but they have a slit in the side of them to allow the horse to see something adjacent to them. They are also used to help a horse to concentrate.
First Time Hood Today
A hood covers the horse’s ears but doesn’t cover any part of their sight so its used as a tactic to relax a horse who may get distracted by the noise from the crowd or elsewhere within the race.
First Time Tongue Strap Today
A tongue strap is a band that is wrapped around the horse’s tongue and then tied around the lower jaw. Where as other pieces of headgear are employed to aid with concentration, the tongue strap is used to help with the horses’s breathing during the race.
First Run After Wind Surgery Today
Horses having wind surgery or a wind operation is becoming increasingly popular in racing and it is a requirement that the Trainer publishes when one of their horses has had it done. Wind surgery can have a dramatic impact on horse performance so horses that have previously fared badly in races can suddenly find themselves winning races because of the positive impact on their breathing. Therefore, it can sometimes mean that horses running for the first time after a wind operation can win races at long odds.
