Andrew Mount’s Daily Racing Preview – Musselburgh & Kempton Racing Analysis for Wednesday 4 November

Six tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on Wednesday, with the Listed Michael Hickey Memorial Chase the feature at Wexford, jumps action at Chepstow and the flat at Musselburgh and Nottingham before Kempton and Dundalk race into the evening. Andrew Mount has horses to watch at both Musselburgh and Kempton, taking a pair of runners out of two races.

3.17 Musselburgh – Homestrait (1pt each-way – 6-1 general)

Homestrait, like Black Storm (see 3.50 Musselburgh), caught the eye against the strong pace bias at the Catterick meeting on October 27th, finishing to good effect when fourth to Marching Mac in a 6f Class 4 handicap. Brian Ellison’s filly will be happier back up in trip to 7f, handles any ground conditions and has run well at this venue before. Jason Hart is on board for the first time which suggests that she’ll be prominent in a race lacking obvious pace angles.

15:17 Nairns Oatcakes Handicap

3.50 Musselburgh – Black Storm (1pt each-way – 5-1 or 11-2 with the firms paying four places, e.g. bet365, Paddy Power)

Black Storm has a difficult draw in stall 11 in this 7f handicap but still looks worth a bet with Jason Hart back on board. In-form Katie Scott’s five-year-old was a big eyecatcher in first-time cheekpieces at Catterick last time, finishing a 20-1 fourth of 15, doing best of those to come from off the pace under 5lb claimer Jake Dickson. He’s hit the frame in three of his four runs here and has started as favourite (5-2, 9-4 and 2-1) when Jason Hart has ridden previously.

15:50 Thank You For The Fun Gweedore Handicap

5.00 Kempton – Valvano (1pt win – 3/1 Hills, bet365)

The Ralph Beckett-trained Valvano has only raced twice on the all-weather previously, finishing a two-length 13-2 second behind 4-7 favourite Notable Speech (rated 94 at the time but now on a mark of 124 after seven Group 1/Grade 1 victories) and landing a hot 7f Class 3 handicap at Southwell in August on his return from a wind operation. His two subsequent defeats can be excused – he met trouble on the rail and had to be switched when seventh of eight in a 7f Listed race at Redcar and was drawn on the wrong side when a 28-1 12th of 20 in the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day. The obvious worry is the possible lack of pace but he made the running when chasing home Notable Speech and Hector Crouch is likely to have him in a prominent position in the early stages.
