Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Notable Trends

10/1 shot Mostahdaf caused a minor shock when landing this race in 2023, but in general, this had been a race that the market has got right, with seven of the last ten winners coming from the top three in the betting, those all priced up at 11/2 or shorter.

The minimum age of horses participating in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes was upped to 4yo when the race received Group 1 classification, but the vast majority of the winners have been either 4yos or 5yos, with So You Think (2012) the last 6yo to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes – albeit being bred in New Zealand he wasn’t a typical 6yo.

Of the horses to have already run that season (eight of the last ten winners), seven had won that campaign, something to bear in mind for any runner coming into the race without a win this campaign.

Prince Of Wales’s Stakes History

The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes dates back to 1862, and once race classification began the Prince Of Wales’s held Group 2 status until being promoted in 2000.

Just three horses have managed to win multiple Prince Of Wales’s with the most of these being Muhtarram (1994, 1995).

There has been no real recent notable success in the Prince Of Wales’s trainer or jockey wise. Morny Cannon remains the most successful jockey in the race having landed six renewals between 1895-1905, whilst six of those wins came for trainer John Porter, whose eight wins make him the most successful trainer in the race’s history.

Godolphin and the 17th Earl of Derby are currently deadlocked as the leading owners in the history of the Prince Of Wales’s with five wins apiece.

Despite well-fancied horses having a decent record in this contest, there have been some notable scalps in recent years. So You Think (4/5F) justified odds-on favouritism in 2012, but since then Treve (2014, 8/13F), A Shin Hikari (2016, 8/13F), Cracksman (2018, 2/5F) and Bay Bridge (2022, 10/11F) have all been turned over at prohibitive odds.
