Wokingham Stakes Tips – Royal Ascot

Run on the final day of Royal Ascot, the Wokingham Stakes is often one of the highest turnover betting races of the entire week. This is because it is a hugely competitive handicap which often sees fields of well over 20 runners go to post. It is likely to be extremely popular with punters again in 2026 after fields of 27 and 25 in the last two renewals.

As a handicap which attracts such a large number of competitors, it is unsurprising that this is not a race to necessarily back the favourite in. You would be down 6.5 points in the last decade for having done this, as only 7/2 favourite Cape Byron has obliged in that period, doing so in 2019.

There has been one other winner at a single-figure price in Rohaan (8/1, 2021), but the latter also caused a minor shock at 18/1 in 2022, while Out Do (25/1, 2017), Bacchus (33/1, 2018) and Saint Lawrence (22/1, 2023) were even bigger surprises to most.

As a result of its competitiveness, no jockey has won more than one renewal in the last decade, while only David Evans has won it multiple times as a trainer, though with the same horse in Rohaan.

As a handicap, it can pay to see whereabouts in the weights the winners have come from. Seven of the last ten winners have emerged from the middle of the handicap or higher, with only two winners in the last decade holding a saddlecloth number in the 20s. Indeed four of the last seven winners have come from the top five in the handicap.

Wokingham Stakes History

Though the race is named after the town relatively local to Ascot, it could also have been named after the first two-time winner of the event. The horse named Wokingham claimed the 1881 and 1882 renewals, with Rohaan the latest to achieve the feat in 2021 and 2022. Only three other horses aside from that duo have won two editions of the Wokingham and no horse has ever done it three times.

Seven different jockeys have achieved victory in the race on three occasions though, including historic luminaries such as Fred Archer and Lester Piggott. Four trainers also finished their careers with three wins in the race, the most recent being Paul Cole when Bel Byou won in 1987.
