All About The Turners Novices’ Chase in 2025

The field for this race is so often unknown until much closer to the off due to the conflicting possibilities of the Arkle and Brown Advisory Novices’ Chases. As such, we will bring you the rundown on the likely field as the Festival approaches.

Turners Novices’ Chase Overlooked Outsiders

Notlongtillmay massively outran his odds at 40/1 when second in 2023, so outsiders can provide a significant threat. We will bring you the best bets on outsiders for the Turners Novices’ Chase before the race.

The Turners Novices’ Chase is open to five-year-olds and upwards with mares receiving a 7lb allowance, although no five-year-old has ever landed the Turners Novices’ Chase since its inception in 2011.

Seven-year-olds have a particularly strong strike rate when lining up in the Turners Novices’ Chase as ten of the 14 runnings have been won by horses from that age group. The only horse to win this event over the age of seven was Gordon Elliot’s Samcro back in 2020, where he defeated fellow eight-year-old Melon by a nose.

Since starting in 2011, the Turners Novices’ Chase has been dominated by Ireland with nine winners, four of which have come from Willie Mullins, who remains the winning most trainer in this particular day three contest.

British trained runners have only tasted success in this event on five occasions, with Taquin Du Seuil in 2014, Defi Du Seuil in 2019, 2021 winner Chantry House and in the last two renewals with Stage Star (2023) and Grey Dawning (2024).

This race has been particularly favourable to the main market principals as 11 of the 14 renewals have been taken by a horse no bigger than 7/1 in the betting.

Four favourites have also taken the last nine runnings of the Turners Novices’ Chase and only one runner has defied a double digit starting price, which was Benefficient in 2013 who won at 20/1.

Chantry House was a rare British-trained winner of the Turners Novices’ Chase in 2021.

2025 Turners Novices’ Chase Prize Money

Just under £172,000 was on offer in last year’s Turners Novices’ Chase, with connections of Grey Dawning claiming £98,500.

Turners Novices’ Chase History

The race was first run in 2011 and was formerly known as the Jewson and JLT, making the Turners Novices’ Chase one of the newest races at the  Cheltenham Festival. The races untitled sponsor is the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase but has always been run under main sponsors.

Jewson were the original sponsors of the third day event before insurance company JLT took over the sponsorship back in 2014. 2014 was also the  same year in which the event was upgraded to a Grade 1 race by the British Horseracing board as previous renewals came under Grade 2 status. Insurance broker Marsh took over the sponsorship from 2020, before transport company Turners took over the sponsorship from the 2022 running.

Past history has showed us that the quality and standard of the Grade 1 race has improved year after year and has thrown up some top future star performers including in the 2019 event where Philip Hobbs’ Defi du Seuil defeated Colin Tizzard’s Lostintranslation. Both British runners went on to collect further Grade 1 prizes as their respected seasons progressed.
