One of the most exciting races of the week, the Queen Mother Champion Chase over 2 miles, is the feature race on Day Two of the Cheltenham Festival. The contest is usually run at a frenetic pace with little room for error in the jumping department.
The race has been won by some of the greats in recent memory, including Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre and Altior. Altior and Master Minded were the only two horses in twenty years to win back-to-back renewals until Energumene joined them in that illustrious group last season.
He will not be the reigning champion for long though, as he has been ruled out of this year’s Festival through injury. HIs absence means that, in all likelihood, this year’s edition will be a two-horse contest regardless of who competes against them, as El Fabiolo and Jonbon are clear favourites ahead of the field.

Champion Chase Odds and Entries 2024
In terms of best odds, only two horses in the remaining 14 entries for the 2024 Queen Mother Champion Chase are shorter than 20/1. That pair are El Fabiolo, currently unbeaten over fences, and Jonbon, runner-up to El Fabiolo in the Arkle and looking to gain avengance.
However, Jonbon was surprisingly turned over in the rearranged Clarence House Chase on Trials Day at Cheltenham by Elixir De Nutz, Joe Tizzard’s grey. Jonbon made one cataclysmic error that day though, and may well atone for that at Cheltenham, although whether he will be good enough to topple Willie Mullins’ favourite is another matter.
Betting on the Queen Mother Champion Chase
The Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham is one of the most thrilling spectacles of the Festival meeting. The roll of honour features such champions as Badsworth Boy (1983-1985), Sprinter Sacre (2013, 2016) and Altior (2018, 2019). The Queen Mother Champion Chase betting 2024 suggests it will be a duel between reigning Arkle champion El Fabiolo and last year’s Arkle runner-up Jonbon.
There have been numerous repeat winners, the most recent being Enerugmene last year. In terms of trial races, the Clarence House has often been a very informative trial in recent years with eight of the last 13 winners having ran in the Clarence House last time out, Sire De Grugy, Dodging Bullets and Altior among those to win both races.
It is usually a good policy to concentrate on the market leaders when you bet on the Queen Mother Champion Chase. 11 of the last 12 winners featured in the first three in the Champion Chase betting. The exception was 11-1 chance Special Tiara in 2017. Class is also a key factor with the last twelve winners all having won at least once previously at Grade 1 level.
