Wolverhampton — Meeting summary (yesterday)
Yesterday’s Wolverhampton card delivered a string of competitive finishes and a couple of late dramas. Billy Loughnane rode a brace of winners, while Michael Appleby enjoyed a double with Intervention and R P McMurphy. The 17:30 fillies’ contest produced the standout stewarding decision of the night — Good Magic Moment was officially placed first after an enquiry that reversed the judge’s first call, demoting Jahami to second. Elsewhere Yehudi prevailed in a tight finale to the opening division, Typeface took the second division, From Me To You won the nursery, and Saxophonist closed the meeting with a convincing finish.
There were a number of non-finishers and withdrawals to note: Als Dawn and Sacred Moment were withdrawn after unseating and running loose before the off, Sant Alessio missed the race due to travel problems and Good Karma was declared out with an abscess. Baloo’s Blues was pulled up in the 17:00 division. These incidents affected the shape of several races but did not diminish a busy night of all-weather action.

Wolverhampton is one of six all-weather tracks in Britain along with Lingfield, Kempton Park, Chelmsford City, Newcastle and Southwell. Its biggest races include the Listed Lady Wulfruna Stakes and The Lincoln Trial on the same card in March. There are also numerous evening meetings under lights throughout the year. Racecourse Guide
Wolverhampton racecourse has been redeveloped into an exciting leisure venue hosting a remarkable 80-plus fixtures each year. The Lady Wulfruna Stakes is the most valuable race staged at the course, a fast-track qualifier for the All-Weather Championships. It guarantees the winner a free entry for the £1 million Finals Day.
The course was re-opened as Britain’s first floodlit racecourse in 1994 and now welcomes 120,000 visitors each year. Wolverhampton was also the first British racecourse to race on Tapeta, which was installed in 2014. The racecourse is left handed and one mile in circumference. It is a very tight, oval track which favours nimble horses which like to race prominently.
Wolverhampton also favours course specialists, notably Stand Guard who won eleven times here and a record 28 times on the all-weather. His career began in 2007, eventually claiming his final victory as a thirteen-year-old ten years later.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Wolverhampton boasts an impressive array of facilities. As well as having plentiful bars and restaurants, it also has an onsite hotel and a busy conference and exhibition centre. There are a range of hospitality packages on offer with fantastic views across the track. Wolverhampton’s Horizons Restaurant is set over three tiers of a stunning glass-fronted building with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the track, while the ground-floor Ringside Suite is now used as a function and exhibition space for up to 600 guests.
There are frequent trains to Wolverhampton Train Station from London, Birmingham and Manchester. The station is about two and a half miles from the track, so a taxi is the best option, while Wolverhampton bus station is a 10-minute walk away.
Tickets
Tickets can be booked in advance online, ranging from Grandstand Advance booking to hospitality packages in the Horizons Restaurant. The Grandstand booking includes access to public bars, eateries and betting outlets with views of the pre-parade ring, parade ring and of course the racing itself. The Effect of the Draw
Although Wolverhampton is a sharp track with a relatively short home straight, there is no discernible draw bias. If you are concerned about a high draw, you can usually predict where the early pace is likely to come from by studying the traits of your horse’s rivals.
