Newcastle: Yesterday’s Review (03 October 2026)

Key moments and winners

Newcastle’s Tapeta card produced competitive fare throughout the evening, with Koko Blue and Blazing Son among the most eye-catching winners. Koko Blue (16:05 Henry Malone 1926 Handicap Div I) took up the running over two furlongs out and, despite hanging right, went clear inside the final furlong to win comfortably. In the second division of the same handicap He’s Our Cracker produced a strong late move to lead inside the final furlong and hold on.

Juveniles and novices supplied a couple of notable results: Waiting For Archie landed the H. Malone & Sons nursery at 14/1, coming through on the near side to lead close home, while Noozhaa asserted late in the Fillies’ Novice Stakes after a loose runner caused disruption in the race (Always Sunny was badly hampered by the loose horse). Big Tribe took the Insulation Contractors Maiden after a battling finish, and Finn Ironside produced a determined on-the-line success in the Armah Switchgear Handicap, rallying to lead on the post.

There were a few non-runners and incidents to note: Bergamo Gold scoped wrong and did not run in the 16:40 division; Maneuver unseated his rider at the start in the 17:45 fillies’ novice; Magnanimous Grecia was declared a non-runner (coughing) in the 18:15 maiden; and Sonbelievable and Nefyn Queen were withdrawn from the 19:15 race. Sandret’s jockey reported being repeatedly denied a clear run in division II of the Henry Malone handicap, and Always Sunny was badly hampered by the loose runner in the novice stakes.

Racecourse Guide

Known locally as Gosforth Park, Newcastle provides a high standard of action under both codes. The Flat course with its uphill rise of four furlongs makes this one of the stiffest tracks in the country and the highlight of the season is undoubtedly the Northumberland Plate in June – a fiercely battled staying handicap.

The Effect of the Draw

There seems to be a slight bias towards high drawn stalls in sprints, but over the 7f and 1m straight course there is plenty of time for horses to get themselves sorted out and galloping, so the draw isn’t as big a deal.
