Nassau Stakes Betting Tips

The Nassau Stakes is one of the three Group 1s run at the Glorious Goodwood festival every year. It is run over 1m2f and is exclusive to fillies and mares. In terms of races only for female horses, it is the first of its kind to see the three-year-olds against older horses during the season.

Plenty of fillies and mares have risen to the very top of European flat racing in recent years, with the likes of Treve, Enable and Alpinista winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Nassau Stakes can prove a key springboard to further success elsewhere and often sees fillies to have taken in Classic challenge the older brigade.

It will be run on Thursday, 31st July in 2024 and Andrew Mount and Matty Sutcliffe will provide their best bets.

Nassau Stakes Racecourse

Goodwood’s 1m2f track undulates and turns sharply, with a gradual downhill section replaced by an incline until the main bend into the straight. From there, the course drifts significantly to the right and moves sharply downhill, ensuring those towards the front can get a brief edge on their rivals on their run for home. At the very end, the track moves uphill again, meaning stamina is tested to the last.

Over this trip, an inside draw can be useful for the bends, but can also mean you get stuck to the rail. Minding in 2016 was the last filly or mare to win from stall 1, with the last two winners emerging from the widest draw.

Betting Strategies for the Nassau Stakes

Betting on the Nassau Stakes can be tricky at times given small fields, but ultimately punters will find plenty of ways to bet using these methods.

Each Way

Last year’s winner Al Husn started at 9/1 before keeping on for victory, while the runner-up to Nashwa in 2022 was 40/1 shot Aristia. Plenty of horses have filled the frame at good prices in recent years to reward each-way backers.

Non Runner No Bet

There are 31 provisional entries for the 2024 Nassau Stakes, while a maximum of only 18 can run. Furthermore, nine has been the biggest field size for the contest in the last decade, so make sure to understand that your ante-post fancy may not be guaranteed to run, and could be better off backed with non runner no bet terms.

Without the Favourite

Four of the ten winners since 2014 have been 2/1 favourites or shorter. This can put off some punters, but there were 16/1 runner-ups to both Minding and Winter who would still have gone off at decent odds without the favourite, as would Aristia at 40/1 in 2022.

Favourite backers would not have had the best time in the Nassau Stakes in recent renewals. Although four have been victorious, and a number of other short prices have been successful, you would be down 1.7 points to a level stake for just having backed the favourites.

Then again, only Deirdre in 2019 went off at a double-figure price before returning to the winners’ enclosure. She is also the only international winner within the last decade despite a number of chancers.

The weight allowance for three-year-olds has proved invaluable for many fillies. They receive 9lb for their age at this point of the season, and that has seen six winners of that demographic and just two winners over the age of four in the last decade.
