2.05 Chester – REDORANGE (1pt win – 11/4 Coral, Ladbrokes)

In the past ten years, Clive Cox is 26 from 122 (21.3% strike-rate) with his runners having their second start since a gelding operation for a profit of £19.48 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 18.75, A/E = 1.39) and REDORANGE, who recorded his career-best RPR when third at Sandown on his reappearance/first gelded outing last month, could well take another step forward this afternoon. The son of Mehmas made all at Yarmouth on his final juvenile outing when Rossa Ryan was up for the first time and he takes over from Finlay Marsh today. He looks the pace angle from a handy low draw in stall 2 and fits the stats for this race, being a colt or gelding, drawn six or lower having raced prominently on turf last time out. Backing all 19 qualifiers on this angle in the past ten renewals would have found eight winners for a profit of £29.00. Last year, 11-1 winner Knicks was the sole qualifier and Redorange is the only one this year.

4.00 Kelso – ASHINGTON (1pt win – 13/2 generally)

ASHINGTON caught the eye when fifth of 16 in the Morebattle Hurdle over 2m5f here in March, doing second best of those to chase the strong early pace. He could only finish 12th of 16 at Cheltenham next time but was only beaten by ten lengths and the tenth from that race was just touched off at Warwick this week and the 13th – Lively Citizen, won at Ffos Las yesterday. Mark Walford’s veteran returns to Class 4 company for the first time since his Doncaster victory in March and he tends to do best in the warmer months, with his last five wins in the March to September period. He’s run well in all four course visits, all of which came in Class 2 or Class 3 company, and he should be able to sit in third place behind front-runners Half Shot and Kilmore Rock before taking it up in the straight.
