Horse racing activity in this area of County Mayo goes back to the 18th century, but Ballinrobe has been an active racecourse since 1921. Perhaps the most famous horse to grace the field here was Dorans Pride, who won a bumper here before landing the 1995 Stayers’ Hurdle and finishing third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1997 and 1998. Ballinrobe encapsulates what Irish racing is all about.

For both Flat and Jumps racing, Ballinrobe racecourse tends to favour speedy types, with the closing stages being downhill. With a sharp home turn on the flat course, you don’t want to be challenging around the outside, as you can get pushed wide and lose a lot of ground.
