Bangor-On-Dee — Yesterday’s results (23 May 2026)

Bangor-On-Dee served up a compact, competitive card with clear winners across the board. Highlights included the short-priced Ladies Day who asserted dominance in the opener, Le Gentleman producing a strong finishing effort in the novices’ handicap chase, and Camshaft making all to take the mares’ handicap hurdle. There were a couple of heavy incidents: Jet Of Dreams fell at the first in the F Jones Initiative Handicap Chase and Mary fell at the last in the Wrexham Lager Novices’ Handicap Chase. Several declared runners were stood down on self-certificate or not qualified.

Key moments

At 13:50 Ladies Day justified favouritism, taking control approaching the last and pulling away readily. Le Gentleman produced a late surge to turn the Wrexham Lager Novices’ Handicap Chase to his advantage, while Crystal Glance and Gris Majeur both went clear late to record comfortable victories in their respective hurdle and chase contests. Somespring Special held off Alien Storm by 1½ lengths in the Bangor-On-Dee Handicap Chase, Camshaft made all in the mares’ handicap and Lady Coco edged out Bourbon Girl by a head in the concluding Mares’ Open NH Flat Race.

Racecourse Guide

Set in glorious countryside beside the River Dee, Bangor-On-Dee is one of the most picturesque racecourses in Britain. It is unique in that it does not have a grandstand and spectators view the action from the grass banks surrounding the track.

Bangor-on-Dee is a sharp, left-handed track where runners are always on the turn. It is notable for its three sharp bends which make it an ideal course for front-runners. The going can be quite firm here during the summer months and the fences are considered fair without being particularly testing. The course favours fast, accurate jumpers who like to race up with the pace rather than long striding animals.

Racing at Bangor-on-Dee dates back to 1859 and once provided a stepping-stone to Aintree Grand National glory. Gamecock (1887), Cloister (1893) and Wild Man From Borneo (1895) all won the Aintree marathon after winning at this course. The Aintree link is maintained through the featured Anne Duchess of Westminster Memorial Handicap Chase. The Duchess famously won the Grand National with Last Suspect in 1985, a 50-1 outsider ridden by Welshman Hywel Davies.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Bangor-on-Dee is a grass roots jumping course with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a family day out. Although lacking a grandstand, the course does have a selection of private hospitality spaces. There are restaurant packages on offer for groups of family and friends or corporate entertainment. Restaurant dining is provided at the Wynnstay Restaurant and Paddock Restaurant. Award-winning chefs deliver an impressive menu complemented by an equally imposing wine and champagne list. It is advisable to book early as there are limited spaces available. Further food outlets are available on course during all meetings.

Bangor-on-Dee is only 25 miles from the Roman city of Chester. Wrexham General is the nearest railway station to the track with a free shuttle bus in operation on all race days.

Tickets

Bangor-on-Dee hosts a family fun day in May ahead of the summer meeting in early June. The course also provides free entertainment and there is a very popular Ladies’ Day in early August. There is also a Countryside Day in early October and Halloween and Christmas meetings. Tickets can be pre-booked for Open Course or the Paddock Enclosure. You can also book a Punters Package which includes paddock enclosure admission, a racecard and a portion of fish and chips on selected race days!
