Situated between the Borders and the Lake District, Carlisle provides locals and tourists alike with an ideal opportunity for a day out at the races. Stamina is an important factor here as the course is galloping in nature and the uphill finish provides a real sting in the tail.
Carlisle is a right handed course of around a mile and a half. The going can become very testing which makes it even more gruelling for jump racing. When the ground gets very soft, jockeys tend to bring their horses over to the stand side in search of better ground.
Carlisle Bell & Plate Day in June is the highlight of the flat racing season. Master Of The House won the Bell in successive seasons in 1994 and 1995. The main jumping event in Carlisle’s calendar is the Colin Parker Memorial Chase in November.
