Yesterday’s meeting at Carlisle produced several eye-catching performances. Watery Borren made virtually all the running to take the Class Of ’63 Novices’ Hurdle, Breizh River fought out a close finish to land the Magnet, Better. By Design Handicap Chase, Wilful claimed the Listed Panoramic Hurdle, Vanilla Dancer sprang a 22/1 surprise in the second division of the Race Home With Genesis Homes Handicap Hurdle and Junior Minister closed the card with a decisive victory in the GA Wilson Plastering Open NH Flat Race. The track was reported as Good to Firm on the chase course (Good in places) before improving to Good after race three, while the hurdle course was Good (watered).

Watery Borren (Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore) set the standard in the opener, controlling the race from the front and proving untroubled in the closing stages. In the staying chase Breizh River (Tristan Davidson) prevailed after being headed and re-taking the lead late on, holding off Sean Og by a neck. The valuable Listed Panoramic Hurdle went to Wilful (Jonjo & A J O’Neill) who took over in the run-in, while Vanilla Dancer (Chris Grant) produced a powerful late move to win the Div II handicap. Junior Minister (Sam England) completed the day by taking the final NH Flat contest with a ready finish.
Notable performances and market clues
Vanilla Dancer’s victory at 22/1 will be one to note for future handicaps, while Breizh River and Wilful both confirmed recent good form in staying company and graded company respectively. Several big-price runners placed across the card (Billable Grant 80/1 into second, Eagle Warrior 33/1 into the frame), emphasising the competitive nature of the fields on the day.

Carlisle stages National Hunt racing through the winter and flat racing during the summer months. The Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate are the most notable flat races and feature at the June meeting. The Bell dates back to 1559 when the Carlisle gold bell was presented for the first time.

Racecourse Guide
Situated between the Borders and the Lake District, Carlisle provides locals and tourists alike with an ideal opportunity for a day out at the races. Stamina is an important factor here as the course is galloping in nature and the uphill finish provides a real sting in the tail.
Carlisle is a right handed course of around a mile and a half. The going can become very testing which makes it even more gruelling for jump racing. When the ground gets very soft, jockeys tend to bring their horses over to the stand side in search of better ground.
Carlisle Bell & Plate Day in June is the highlight of the flat racing season. Master Of The House won the Bell in successive seasons in 1994 and 1995. The main jumping event in Carlisle’s calendar is the Colin Parker Memorial Chase in November. Names to feature on the roll of honour include top class chasers Many Clouds (2014), Monet’s Garden (2006) and Tidal Bay (2008).

Tickets
Carlisle stages racing all-year-round with winter jumps fixtures and summer flat meetings. Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Day in June is the flat highlight while there are also Family Fun Days, Steak Nights and a Ladies Night in early July.
General Admission tickets give access to food vendors, bars and seating across the site, and booking in advance gets the best price. There are also group concessions for parties of ten or more, while the Steak Package and Winter Warmer offer good-value dining.
The Effect of the Draw
There are varied opinions on the effect of the draw at Carlisle. Runners who come down the centre of the track in the home straight seem to do best while statistics suggest that there is a slight advantage for low numbers in races over five and six furlongs.
