Cartmel Race Results

Cartmel is a popular holiday venue in the Lake District which stages nine days of summer jumps racing between May and August. Some of the meetings take place over bank holiday weekends, adding to the special atmosphere at the venue.

The traditional season opener takes place at the end of May followed by the Whit Bank Holiday Monday meeting and a popular evening meeting. The three race days are spread over five days so it has a festival feel to it. The most valuable race at Cartmel is the Cartmel Crystal Cup Handicap Hurdle over two and three-quarter miles in July. Cartmel Cup Day takes place in late August prior to the Bank Holiday Season Finale which also features the Cavendish Cup.

Racecourse Guide

Cartmel is only a mile in circumference and is a tight, left handed track but with a long run-in of half a mile from the last fence. There are six fences to a circuit with the last three coming in fairly quick succession before the long run for home. On good ground, it definitely favours runners that like to race up with the pace. A prime example was the front-running Tonto’s Spirit who became the most successful horse in Cartmel’s history, recording his ninth win at the track in August 2023.

For a tight circuit, it can become surprisingly testing, particularly in soft ground. The lead can change at least once after the last with jockeys keen to restrain their horses so that they have something left for the closing stages.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Cartmel rekindles the social gathering tradition of years gone by with its party crowds and funfair. There are a wide range of food and drink options at this traditional holiday venue. You can enjoy fine dining at the R.F. Miller & Co Restaurant or Parade Ring Dining, stroll among the exciting array of food stalls or bring your own picnic lunch. Indeed, while a picnic may be frowned upon at some of the Grade 1 tracks, they are positively encouraged here!

Local produce is promoted at Cartmel with true Cumbrian ale fresh from the barrel, Morecambe Bay shrimp and Lakeland produced Gin and Tonic among the options. If you’re looking to entertain, you can reserve party tents or picnic benches with full contact details for party packages on the website. The nearest train stations are Cark-in-Cartmel which has a shuttle bus to the racecourse on race days or Grange-over-Sands. Taxis cannot drop off at the main entrances; the taxi drop-off and pick-up point is opposite Cartmel Priory School on Headless Cross, and pre-booking is strongly advised.
