Chelmsford Race Results

Chelmsford is the UK’s newest racecourse, having been officially opened in 2015. It is the only racecourse in Essex and regular stages all-weather flat racing with around sixty meetings per year. It is one of only five fully floodlit all-weather tracks in the UK.

Being only 50 miles from the training centre at Newmarket, it has proved very popular with the leading trainers. Chelmsford is regarded as the ideal venue for unraced or inexperienced horses, often learning their trade here before moving on to contest top class races on turf.

It currently stages two Listed races’ the Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes in May and the Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes in June. Notable winners of the Queen Charlotte Stakes include 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook and Grade 1 winning sprinter Highfield Princess.

GG publish full Chelmsford race results within moments of the weigh in being confirmed. The winner, placed horses and SP returns are displayed as soon as possible on Today’s Results & Racecards page. This is later updated with the complete finishing order and Tote returns which can be accessed by clicking on each race title.

Racecourse Guide

Originally opened in 2008 as Great Leighs, the first new track in the UK for 80 years, the course was closed the following year. It was eventually re-opened under its current name by a syndicate led by Betfred’s Fred Done.

Chelmsford is a left handed, oval track of just over a mile. There are separate chutes for races over seven furlongs and a mile. The course is known for its wide, sweeping turns and considerable efforts have been made to reduce kickback. It is based on the oval configuration of American racetracks and it has been proud to be part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series through the Cardinal Stakes.

In 2017 Chelmsford announced plans to build a casino with a new turf course inside the all-weather track. Once opened, it will be the first floodlit grass track in Europe and will mean that Chelmsford can emulate the Breeders’ Cup style format of turf and all-weather track events on the same card.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

As well as racing, the course often hosts themed evenings and concerts. There are several hospitality packages on offer including premier dining at The Club Restaurant & Lounge. It has recently been refurbished and provides panoramic views across the racecourse while you enjoy modern British cuisine and VIP treatment.

The Fairwood Brasserie is situated on the ground floor of the Grandstand and offers something for everyone. A sumptuous carvery is provided during the winter while summer racegoers can enjoy a flavourful selection of cold meats and fresh seafood. Other dining opportunities at Chelmsford include the Sports Bar, Queen Charlotte Marquee, Summer Marquee and Parade Ring Marquee.

Chelmsford City racecourse is just five miles north of Chelmsford in Essex. There are frequent train services from London Liverpool Street to Chelmsford Station, 15 minutes from the course. Braintree station is 10 minutes away from the track and frequent taxis run from both stations on race days.

Tickets

You can book Chelmsford City race day packages and daily admission tickets online. A General Admission ticket grants you access to the Sports Bar and Grill Kitchen as well as providing viewing from the Home Straight Terrace and Parade Ring. You can also reserve the complete wining and dining experience to make the most of your day at the races!

The Effect of the Draw

There is no obvious bias at Chelmsford, but the kickback on polytrack does mean that you don't want your horse getting too far behind. The surface basically favours front runners and the relatively short home straight means it is very difficult to come from off the pace.
