Racing at Clonmel on Good ground produced a competitive card with Dairy Force (Gordon Elliott / James Smith) opening the meeting in style in the 13:49 Clonmel Handicap Hurdle, ridden to lead from the 2 out and always holding on. The claiming contest saw Tullyveery Lad (R P Cody / Donagh Meyler) take the spoils after a late duel, while Eternal Reward (Ms Margaret Mullins / Danny Mullins) edged out Lincall in a thrilling finish in the maiden. Mount Shenshan (Thomas Mullins / Sean Cleary Farrell) proved decisive in the mares’ handicap, Bobby Kirova (Michael Butler / Daniel King) pulled clear in the novice handicap, Hopeful Hero (T Hogan / Donagh Meyler) struck late in the novice handicap and Private Policy (Nigel Thomas Slevin / Paddy Cleary) won a tight finale, getting the better of Poetic Focus close home.
The meeting was not without incident: Shanroe fell and was fatally injured in the Slievenamon Claiming Hurdle, Marlpark and Woodie Wiley also fell, and Vargas unseated after being hampered. Several declared runners were withdrawn on veterinary or health grounds (e.g. Holy Joe, Warm In Gorey, Ddakji, Pixie Hill, Maxicourt). Overall it was a testing day for connections but yielded several clear and gutsy performances from the winners.

Clonmel Race Results
Clonmel in County Tipperary stages 12 meetings per year with a mixture of flat and jumps fixtures. The Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase in November is the highest rated race at the course. Dorans Pride won it for a record four successive seasons from 1997 to 2000. Other notable names on the roll of honour include Edredon Bleu (2003), Sizing Europe (2012) and Douvan (2019).
The Listed T.A. Morris Memorial Mares Chase at the same meeting has been won by the likes of Vroum Vroum Mag (2015), Shattered Love (2019, 2020) and Mount Ida (2021). The Grade 3 Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle over three miles in February has also been won by some high class horses including Don Poli (2014) and Allaho (2019).

Racecourse Guide
The racecourse is set in beautiful woodland surroundings in Clonmel town in County Tipperary. Clonmel is a right-handed, undulating dual-purpose track of a mile and a quarter. It is regarded as quite a testing National Hunt course with a stiff uphill climb followed by a downhill run and then back uphill to the finishing line. There are seven fences to each circuit on the chase course and a run-in of about 150 yards after the last.
The jumps track does tend to favour front runners and produces plenty of course specialists. It is a similar story on the flat, although it is easier to come from off the pace in softer ground.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Clonmel caters for all tastes and budgets with a wide variety of hospitality options. The upstairs bar at the spacious Club Stand provides stunning views of the racetrack. Masterchefs Hospitality provides the catering with special packages available for private bookings and events.
There are three bars; The T.A. Morris Bar under the main grandstand, the glass fronted Club Stand Bar and the Supporters Club Bar with a balcony overlooking the winning post. Hot dinners, sandwiches and snacks are served in the restaurant under the Club Stand and the Snack Bar has a fine selection of fast food options.
Clonmel racecourse is at Powerstown Park on Clonmel Bypass approximately two miles from the town centre. It is less than half a mile from the train station which is just off the Fethard roundabout.

The Effect of the Draw
A low draw is considered an advantage at Clonmel, especially from the ten furlong and mile and a half starts. Horses are on the turn for a long way from those starting points and a low draw can save a lot of ground.
