Yesterday’s meeting at Clonmel on GOOD (Good to yielding in places; watered) ground produced an eventful seven-race card. The winners were Dahoma, Timurshah, Getaway Henry, Holy Joe, Thecompanysergeant, Global Skies and Sallap. Several races were shaped by incidents — runners being carried out or running out, a number of falls and an unseat, plus veterinary and reserve declarations — all of which had an impact on finishing orders across the card.

Key moments and winners

The opening Bulmers Original Maiden Hurdle saw Dahoma (9/1) come through from the prominent group to be left in front at the second and go clear, running on well to take the contest. In Division I of the Bulmers Berries Handicap Hurdle Timurshah (20/1) produced a front-running success, leading from 2 out and going clear to score readily. Division II belonged to Getaway Henry (22/1), who worked his way into contention from midfield and led approaching the home two to hold on. The Talbot Hotel Clonmel (C & G) Maiden Hurdle went to Holy Joe (25/1) who made the decisive move 2 out and kept on; the feature Bulmers Strawberry & Lime Hurdle was comfortably taken by Thecompanysergeant (4/11). Global Skies (7/2) bounced back in the Bulmers Zero Handicap Hurdle despite being hampered by a faller mid-race, and the night cap, the Paul Kavanagh Memorial Handicap Hurdle, was taken by Sallap (12/1) after a patient ride from the rear.

Incidents and course notes

There were plenty of non-routine moments: Mon Sheriffe unseated, Rogue Sea and Portarlington both fell, Whoyougonnacall fell, and several horses were reported by the vets or declared reserves. A number of runners were described as being carried out or running out in the opening juvenile/hurdle contests — these incidents influenced both the pace and finishing order. Overall the going played fair for the front-runners, but the interruptions proved decisive in a number of races.

Racecourse Guide

The racecourse is set in beautiful woodland surroundings in Clonmel town in County Tipperary. Clonmel is a right-handed, undulating dual-purpose track of a mile and a quarter. It is regarded as quite a testing National Hunt course with a stiff uphill climb followed by a downhill run and then back uphill to the finishing line. There are seven fences to each circuit on the chase course and a run-in of about 150 yards after the last.

The jumps track does tend to favour front runners and produces plenty of course specialists. It is a similar story on the flat, although it is easier to come from off the pace in softer ground.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Clonmel caters for all tastes and budgets with a wide variety of hospitality options. The upstairs bar at the spacious Club Stand provides stunning views of the racetrack. Masterchefs Hospitality provides the catering with special packages available for private bookings and events.

There are three bars; The T.A. Morris Bar under the main grandstand, the glass fronted Club Stand Bar and the Supporters Club Bar with a balcony overlooking the winning post. Hot dinners, sandwiches and snacks are served in the restaurant under the Club Stand and the Snack Bar has a fine selection of fast food options.

Clonmel racecourse is at Powerstown Park on Clonmel Bypass approximately two miles from the town centre. It is less than half a mile from the train station which is just off the Fethard roundabout.

The Effect of the Draw

A low draw is considered an advantage at Clonmel, especially from the ten furlong and mile and a half starts. Horses are on the turn for a long way from those starting points and a low draw can save a lot of ground.
