Racecourse Guide
The Curragh in County Kildare is one of the finest horse racing tracks in the world. Home to many thousands of horses and scores of training establishments in the surrounding area, the course is the beating heart of the Irish racing scene.
The main racetrack is a long, winding, right-handed horse-shoe of two miles with a three-furlong uphill finish. There is also a straight seven furlong course latching onto the main track on what is widely considered to be a fair racecourse with no excuses for beaten horses.
Races up to seven furlongs start from a chute with runners racing slightly on the turn from the starting gate. There is a separate start for mile races with one right-hand bend into the home straight.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
The Curragh has all of the facilities you would expect from a world class racing venue. You can enjoy fine dining at the Oaks Restaurant (2nd floor of the grandstand) or St Leger Restaurant (3rd floor). The Oaks is a bright, elegant room with oak panel flooring and glass walls and guests have access to the adjacent balcony for parade ring viewing. The St Leger Restaurant can accommodate parties up to 100 guests with a three-course a la carte dining menu and tea and coffee.
There are also private boxes and suites available for the ultimate in comfort and luxury at the races. Private boxes 5 and 6 can accommodate parties from 10 to 16 guests while 10, 11 and the Galileo Suite are available for parties from 18 to 60 guests. All include access to a private balcony for breath-taking views of the racing action.
The nearest Rail Station is at Kildare Town with mainline services from Dublin (Heuston), Waterford, Cork, Limerick and Galway. A shuttle bus to the course is provided at weekends throughout the season.
Tickets
You can book your Curragh Early Bird Admission tickets online to benefit from a 25% discount. There is also a Curragh Bundle option which includes general admission, a racecard, a 10 euro food voucher and a 5 euro Tote voucher.
The Effect of the Draw
Statistics suggest that low numbers enjoy a big advantage over five furlongs at the Curragh, although there are relatively few races over this distance. There does not appear to be any bias in races over six or seven furlongs here. However, high numbers are favoured over a mile in soft ground as the runners edge towards the stands side in search of better ground.
