Downpatrick Race Results

Downpatrick is one of just two racecourses in Northern Ireland (Down Royal being the other) and is reputedly the oldest course in the whole of Ireland. It is claimed that Byerley Turk, one of the three foundation stallions of the thoroughbred, raced here in 1690. The course stages nine National Hunt meetings between March and October. The highlight is the Ulster Grand National in late March or early April. There are also popular evening meetings in May and Ladies Day in August.

Racecourse Guide

Downpatrick is known to be one of the friendliest courses in the country and is set in a beautiful part of Northern Ireland. A strong racing community around here love their local track which is just a mile from the centre of the historic town. The Ulster National takes place over an extended three and a half miles with 16 fences to be jumped. Leading Irish Trainers Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Noel Meade and Gavin Cromwell have all been successful in this race.

The term “horses for courses” certainly applies at Downpatrick, a trappy right-handed course in County Down which has ups and downs and dips and curves aplenty and is a test for both horse and jockey. It suits nippy and well-balanced horses who can jump well at speed, as if they don’t the contest can quickly get away from them. The challenge for the rider is to try to give your horse a breather and stay close to the pace, although stamina can come into play in the closing stages if the leaders go off too fast.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

There are three hospitality rooms to hire; The Byerley Turk, Brownlow Suite and Dunleath Suite. The Byerley Turk is an intimate suite with a maximum of 12 guests and includes a bar waiter service and Tote waiter service. The Brownlow Suite has elevated views over the winning line and a private balcony at the top of the grandstand and caters to up to 100 guests. The Dunleath can facilitate in excess of 350 guests and is the perfect venue for weddings, parties and charity fundraisers.

The nearest railway station to Downpatrick is at Lisburn, around 20 miles away. The Downpatrick Racecourse Platform station closed to passengers in 1950.
