    Racecourse Guide

    Home to the Derby and Oaks, Epsom Downs has been staging the former event since 1780 and it is generally recognised as the most famous horse race in the world. Quite probably the most unusual and testing Flat racing track on the planet, the twelve-furlong Derby trip provides a roller-coaster ride, most notably the turn into the most famous bend in racing, Tattenham Corner. Epsom Downs is a left-handed, ‘U’ shaped course, which favours handy types due to the bends and pronounced downhill gradients. The five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the world, due to it being downhill virtually throughout.

    Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

    For a finer, premium experience there are plenty of hospitality options available. There are a trio of restaurant options to choose from – The Derby Suite, the Carvery Experience and the Classic Lounge Experience. Each restaurant offers a minimum two course meal and a private table for the day. 

    If you’re part of a bigger group and are looking for a bit more privacy the racecourse also offers private boxes for hire. There are three different options to choose from (Classic, Premier and VIP), with prices starting from £139 per person. Each box includes a minimum two course meal, tea and coffee plus a private balcony overlooking the racecourse.

    With the exception of the Derby, Epsom’s stands are open as one enclosure and allow racegoers to move freely between both the Queen’s Stand and the Grandstand. For the Derby, there are a variety of options available, including:

    • Upper Tattenham
    • Picnic enclosure
    • Lonsdale
    • The Hill

    The Effect of the Draw

    There isn’t much of a draw bias over the 5f course these days but there is over 6f and 7f, when front-runners drawn low have an advantage on all ground except soft (when the fields usually come to the stand rail).
