Exeter — Results from Friday 17 April 2026

Exeter produced a competitive card in good (watered) ground with several eye-catching performances. Our Guide justified favouritism in the Sandygate Inn maiden, while Mr Jukebox powered clear in the New Inn handicap and Modern Style (25/1) provided the day’s biggest surprise in the novices’ handicap. Dunstall Star denied Show Your Hand in a tight finale on the flat, and Got A Dream and Square Du Roule claimed the other hurdle contests.

Key notes and takeaways

Going: GOOD (Watered; 6.7) throughout the card. Notable non-runners/self-certificates: Stone Cold (self-certificate – stone bruise), Amatchmadeinheaven (self-certificate – coughing) and Country Pursuits (unsuitable ground). Pulled-ups included Oscar Jack, Stinginhisstep, Thank You Blue and Monsun Climate. Several winners travelled strongly before producing decisive moves approaching the last or on the run-in, most notably Mr Jukebox and Modern Style.

Summary

Overall it was a productive evening for connections who targeted Exeter on good, watered ground. Trainers Nigel Hawke and Tom George both enjoyed winners, while Gavin Sheehan rode two of the winners (Our Guide and Dunstall Star). The card offered a mix of expected results and surprises — most notably the 25/1 success of Modern Style — and a number of withdrawals and pull-ups that shaped several races.

Exeter Race Results

Exeter racecourse stages 17 days of good quality National Hunt racing between October and May. The highlight of the season is the Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup held in November. Notable past winners include Viking Flagship (1997), Flagship Uberalles (1999), Best Mate (2001) and Cue Card (2012). Travado won the race for three successive seasons between 1993 and 1995 for Trainer Nicky Henderson and jockey Jamie Osborne.

Best Mate won the Haldon Gold Cup as a six-year-old and famously went on to win three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups. The Princess Royal opened the Haldon Stand in 2004 which includes a bar named after Best Mate as well as the Desert Orchid Restaurant. Best Mate also has a race named after him at the October meeting. Devon National Day in February is another popular fixture, a competitive handicap chase over three and three-quarter miles.

GG provides detailed Exeter race results as quickly as possible. The winner, placed horses and SP returns are published as soon as the weigh in is confirmed. This is updated with the complete finishing order which can be accessed by clicking on each race title.

Racecourse Guide

Situated at the top of Haldon Hill, Exeter is widely regarded as one of the stiffest tracks in the country. The standard of racing is above average, principally due to its location close to a number of powerful National Hunt stables. The fences are very inviting and the top stables often introduce their better novice chasers here.

Exeter is an undulating right hand track of about two miles. The course is generally considered fair but gets particularly testing in soft ground. The long home straight of about half a mile certainly puts the emphasis on stamina when there is plenty of cut in the ground.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Horse racing is believed to have taken place in this area as early as the mid-17th century. A new grandstand was built in 1911 and the racecourse has been at the heart of west country racing ever since. Exeter also provides extra entertainment including novelty charity races for Clydesdale horses and Dartmoor ponies.

The Desert Orchid Restaurant Package boasts stunning views over the racecourse including the winning post. It comes with a delicious three course carvery luncheon/dinner and waiter/waitress service. The course also offers private boxes with first class hospitality and your own private balcony. They range from the Classic Box Experience to the Premier and VIP Box packages.

The nearest railway station is Exeter St Davids with trains running direct from London Paddington. There is a free shuttle bus from the railway station to the racecourse on all Exeter race days.

Tickets

You can book Exeter daily admission tickets and race day packages online. General admission gives racegoers access to all ground floor facilities including five bars, all of which provide a wide range of food and drink options. There is a £3 discount for Groups of 10 or more.
