Fontwell results — 21 October 2026

Fontwell staged a six-race card on soft ground (Good to soft in places; 4.9) in testing conditions that favoured front‑running and staying horses. Tread Carefully made all to land the Bet Clever BetGoodwin Maiden Hurdle, while Sea Warrior and Uncle Al were the day’s other emphatic winners in the bigger chase events. Diamond White and Grand Conqueror both dug deep to score in the mares’ and handicap hurdle divisions, and Anothermanicmonday was ultimately declared the winner of the card’s finale after the placed adjustments.

Key incidents included Known Warrior unseating at the fifth in the St Wilfrid’s Chase, several pull‑ups in the BetGoodwin Steamer of the Day Handicap Chase, and a number of non‑runners/self‑certifications. The going clearly tested stamina and helped produce decisive margins in several races.

Fontwell stages around 20 jumps meetings throughout the year with the highlight being the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle in late February. The race is named after the Champion Hurdle winner in 1947 and 1948 who was a five-times course winner at Fontwell. It regularly attracts some of the leading long distance hurdlers ahead of the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Fontwell also stages the Southern National in November, a competitive handicap chase over three miles and three and a half furlongs. This marathon event provides a thrilling spectacle over this unique jumps track which also stages an Oktoberfest raceday in October, a popular Ladies evening in August and a Boxing Day fixture.

Racecourse Guide

An extremely popular National Hunt track with more than a modicum of charm, Fontwell is one of only two racecourses run over a figure-of-eight circuit, the other being Windsor. Total refurbishment of all grandstands in the late nineties has vastly improved facilities for racegoers. A new £6.5 million grandstand was opened in the Premier Enclosure in 2010.

Punters are provided with the rare option of viewing races from inside the course to get right in amongst the racing action. Fontwell is a sharp track: the hurdles course is a left-handed oval and the chase course a figure-of-eight, which suits fast, accurate jumpers who like to race up with the pace. Conditions can get extremely testing here so a race like the Southern National certainly provides a test of stamina.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had her first ever winner here when Monaveen won the Chichester Handicap Chase in October 1949. Fontwell is notable for its course specialists including 14 times winner Certain Justice and 11 times winner St Athans Lad. Famous course winners include two-time Champion Hurdler Comedy Of Errors and dual Stayers’ Hurdle winner Baracouda, who won the National Spirit Hurdle here in 2001.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Fontwell combines its unique trackside action with a superb range of hospitality packages. The course restaurants and bars all provide stunning views of the racecourse against the backdrop of the Arundel scenery. The Premier Lounge Restaurant is located on the first floor of the Premier Grandstand with a viewing balcony while there are 12 exclusive private boxes, complete with a dedicated host, mouth-watering buffet and access to all public areas. Marquee hospitality is also available during the summer fixtures and there are numerous food stands around the course.

Fontwell Park is located on the A27/A29 roundabout between Chichester and Arundel in West Sussex. The closest railway station to the racecourse is Barnham with frequent trains from London Victoria, Portsmouth and Brighton. Passengers from Southampton can go direct to Barnham with a shuttle bus direct to the course on race days.
