Galway Race Results

Galway racecourse stages flat and jumps racing from late July/early August through to October. The seven-day Galway Festival dominates the fixture list, accounting for seven of the thirteen race days during the calendar year.

The summer meeting was extended to a full 7-day fixture in 1999. The course underwent a major redevelopment ahead of the 2018 festival meeting and now attracts an estimated 150,000 spectators during the week. The Festival celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2019 where the main betting races are the Galway Plate on the Wednesday and Galway Hurdle on Ladies’ day (Thursday).

GG provide detailed Galway race results as quickly as possible. The winner, placed horses and SP returns are published as soon as the weigh in is confirmed. This is updated with the complete finishing order which can be accessed by clicking on each race title.

Racecourse Guide

The Galway festival is now established as one of Ireland’s biggest annual sporting events. The emphasis is on competitive racing rather than quality, giving the meeting its own special flavour. The two-mile Galway Hurdle is the most valuable race of the week while the Galway Plate is the featured chase over two and three-quarter miles.

Galway is a tight, right handed track of about ten furlongs situated in the village of Ballybrit in County Galway in Ireland. The ground is undulating and there is a dip approaching the final two fences before a stamina-sapping uphill finish. Horses need to meet the second last fence on a good stride or they could be caught out.

The horses are constantly on the turn here so it is best to side with runners who can stay close to the pace. Horses coming from the rear of the field can meet traffic problems in large fields. On good ground this track suits sharp ex-flat racers but the more stoutly-bred National Hunt horses come into their own on softer ground. Flat racers can encounter even more trouble in running and, with a run-in of just over a furlong, there is no margin for error.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

There are several hospitality packages on offer for the big Festival meeting. Corporate packages include the Panoramic Restaurant Package exclusive to the Millennium Stand. There is also the Killanin Stand Gold Package, featuring the Plate and Hurdle Suite, each boasting breath-taking views of the track.

Other options include the Killanin Stand Silver Package and the Weekend Special. The value for money Festival Package is very popular with Sports and Social Clubs, as is the Premium Festival Package with applies to groups of ten or more.

Galway racecourse is located off the M6 motorway and can be easily reached from Dublin, Cork or Limerick. It is only 40 miles from Shannon Airport, 2 hours from Dublin Airport and an hour from Knock Airport. There is a shuttle bus in operation from Eyre Square direct to the racecourse for the Galway Festival meeting.

Tickets

You can buy tickets in advance online, often at a discounted prices, for all meetings at Galway racecourse. Ticket options for the big Festival meeting start from one-day admission with discounts for seniors and students to Flexi Admission (any single day of the meeting). You can also purchase a Three Day Ticket or an Annual Badge, granting admission to all thirteen Galway race days.

The Effect of the Draw

A low draw is a definite advantage in the competitive seven furlong and mile handicaps. Horses drawn high can use up a lot of energy in the early stages to secure a prominent position. Previous form at the track is also a positive factor.
