Racecourse Guide

Haydock park is a left handed, flat course that is oval-shaped and around 13 furlongs long. The run-in rises throughout and is roughly 4½ furlongs long. It is seen as one of the finest racecourses in the country and the premier year-round track in the North. On the Flat, the highlight is the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup in early September whereas the National Hunt season features the valuable Grand National Trial, formerly the 'Red Square Vodka' Gold Cup in February and a host of other top-class three mile chases. Both courses suit the long-striding, galloping individuals, particularly when the ground rides on the soft side, which is often the case.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

For a finer, premium experience there are plenty of hospitality options available. There are three restaurants - Kauto Star, Park Suite and Harry’s Bistro.

If you’re part of a bigger group or are looking to host friends and family then there is also the option of a private box to hire. These come with a dedicated hospitality team, reserved car parking, premier enclosure admission and a private bar with a dedicated Box host. There are two different package options available for the private boxes - the VIP Box Package (located on level four of the Tommy Whittle Stand) and the Premier Box Package (located on levels two and three of the Tommy Whittle Stand).

Tickets

There are various enclosures you can get tickets for at Haydock, including:

  • Be Friendly enclosure (cheapest option) is the family friendly area, which includes a cafeteria and a bar, as well as access to on-course bookmakers.
  • Grandstand & Paddock (mid-range option) is the largest of Haydock’s four enclosures, and offers an excellent view of the racecourse. It also offers access to the Parade Ring and the Winners Enclosure.
  • County Enclosure (top-range option) is directly opposite the winning posts and gives you access to several suites, including the Champagne and Seafood Bar. It also includes access to seated and standing viewing areas, as well as access to the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure.
  • Premier Enclosure (premium option) is situated on the top floor of the Centenary Stand, and offers a more relaxed, sophisticated surroundings to enjoy the racing from. It also includes exclusive access to ‘Harry’s Bistro’ Restaurant facility, as well as a viewing balcony overlooking the Winning Post.

The Effect of the Draw

High numbers used to be favoured in sprints when the ground was good or softer, but low numbers now seem to have a decent advantage, especially on soft or heavy. Cross out all those drawn in double-figures in 18+ runner sprints on soft or heavy ground.

Races run over seven furlongs see the runners tend to stick towards the far rail (unless the ground is testing), and will aim to get in a good position when they swing in to come up the straight. On the straight six furlong course, runners tend to race towards the centre of the track. If the ground is good or firmer, it tends to favour those ridden prominently, with the conditions placing an emphasis on speed.
