Laytown Race Results
Laytown in County Meath is truly unique as they race on the beach for just one day every September. The course is only marked out the previous day and dismantled immediately after racing. A straight course of seven furlongs is temporarily established on the wet sand and there are no starting stalls.
You can get the latest Laytown race results by clicking on Today’s Results & Racecards from the dropdown menu. This page is continually updated with one of the fastest results services on offer. The winner and placed horses with SP returns are published as soon as the weigh in has been confirmed. This is later updated with the complete finishing order and Tote returns which can be accessed by clicking on each race title.
Racecourse Guide
The first official Laytown Races took place in 1868. By the 1950’s and 60’s, the meeting was regarded as a useful prep for horses destined for the Galway Festival with races from five furlongs to two miles.
Modern-day restrictions were imposed after a serious incident in 1994. A horse was spooked by a small river stream and bolted into the crowd. Several spectators were hurt along with one rider and three horses were fatally injured. Races are now only held over 6f and 7f with field sizes restricted and only experienced riders allowed to take part. The wet sand rides similar to firm ground on turf so it does not suit horses who have shown their best form on a softer surface.
The novelty of an official race day on the beach makes this meeting very popular with the public, attracting around 5,000 patrons and curious first-time racegoers each year. It is a truly unique event and the only officially regulated horse racing meeting held on a beach in Europe.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Because of the nature of the event all hospitality tents and facilities are temporary. The jockey’s weighing room and all of the bars and food outlets consist of temporary marquees and stalls.
Laytown is a small seaside resort on the east coast of Ireland, just under 30 miles from Dublin. There are regular trains from Drogheda and Dublin (Connolly Station) to Laytown train station. The station is a ten minute walk from the racecourse and a free shuttle bus service runs one hour before the opening race.
Tickets
You can book your Laytown Races tickets online with discounts offered to senior citizens and students (ID may be required). Children under 16 can go free provided they are accompanied by an adult.
