Leicester recap — key events and winners from yesterday

Leicester served up a productive evening on good ground (Good to soft in places; 6.5), with several well-timed front-running displays and a surprise at big odds late in the card. Dr Rascal landed the opener for Oliver Cole and Kaiya Fraser at 18:00, while Regal Chita (5/6) and Electric Dreams (13/8) both justified short-priced support in the earlier divisions. Fenlander and Cobalt Comet each produced authoritative front-running performances in the handicaps, but the standout price winner was Oasis Sunrise (18/1) who grabbed the 21:00 contest. A small number of declarations were withdrawn: Pat’s Cash was declared in error, and Breacher and Magic Lady Mae were withdrawn due to unsuitable ground.

Overall the programme (18:00–21:00) combined comfortable favourites and closely fought finishes, with several tight margins inside the final furlong. Trainers James Fanshawe, John Mackie and Pam Sly all enjoyed winners, while Silvestre De Sousa and Jack Gilligan featured prominently among the jockeys on the card.

Leicester Race Results

Leicester racecourse stages over thirty race meetings per year with a mixture of flat and jumps. The Listed King Richard III Stakes is the highlight of the flat racing season and takes place in April. The race formerly held Group 3 status and was won three times by Warningford (1999, 2001 and 2002).

There is a Bank Holiday Fun Day at the end of May with regular evening flat meetings during the summer and a Sunday Family Fun Day in mid-August. There are plenty of competitive National Hunt events at the track including the Leicestershire Silver Fox Handicap Chase in December.

Racecourse Guide

All flat races up to one mile at Leicester are staged on the straight course which joins the main round track at the five-furlong pole. The oval track is right handed and nearly two miles in circumference with a run in of over half a mile. There is a gradual climb in the home straight during the last two furlongs to the winning post.

When the going is soft it is an advantage to bring horses over towards the better ground under the stands’ rail. The uphill finish catches out runners that have raced too keenly in the early part of the race. The top flat stables like to run their late maturing two-year-olds here as they have plenty of time to find their stride in the home straight.

The hurdles races are run on the flat racing track which can often ride softer than the chase course. The fences are not as daunting as they once were at Leicester but they still take some jumping. It can be quite a tricky course for a novice chaser.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Leicester racecourse provides hospitality from individual seats to conferences and events for up to 500 people. The track boasts an air-conditioned panoramic Club Restaurant which offers comfort, style and luxury. The private Nelson Suite can cater for up to 260 guests and the special package includes a drink upon arrival and a three course formal meal and cheese board.

The course also invites bookings for their private executive boxes with excellent views of the racecourse. These include a host for the day, designated free parking and a two course buffet and afternoon tea. The Paddock Pavilion is located on the spacious lawn overlooking the winners’ enclosure and the refurbished Club Room caters for up to 120 guests with amazing head-on views of the racing. Leicester Train Station is just two miles from the course with frequent bus and taxi services on race days.

Tickets

You can book your Leicester advance admission tickets online. You can also reserve your Restaurant package with additional special menus designed for children, both over and under the age of 13. Executive boxes in Band A can be booked for a minimum of 10 up to 40 guests.

The Effect of the Draw

There is a slight draw bias in favour of low numbers in races from six furlongs up to a mile at Leicester. There does not appear to be any discernible bias in five furlong races.
