Racecourse Guide
Racing was first staged at Navan in 1920 and many a great horse has graced the turf at the Grade 1 track. These include Champion Hurdlers Hardy Eustace and Brave Inca and the legendary Champion Chaser Moscow Flyer, twice successful in the Fortria Chase.
Navan is a left-handed track of a mile and a quarter with sweeping bends and a stiff uphill climb to the winning line. The home straight is around three and a half furlongs and many horses have faltered in the closing stages so stamina is a key factor under both codes. Many of Ireland’s finest hurdlers and chasers will race here on route to the big festivals in spring.
The Vintage Crop Stakes is named after Dermot Weld’s 1993 Melbourne Cup winner. It was first run in 2003 and is now established as a trial for the Ascot Gold Cup. Record four times Ascot winner Yeats won this race in 2007 and 2008.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Navan offers a wide range of hospitality starting with the Racecourse Café, kitted out with relaxing furnishings and TV screens for those wishing to view the action with the comfort of a hot drink and a snack. There is also a covered picnic area.
The Troytown Café and Bar is located beneath the Grandstand and a short walk from the parade ring. The recently refurbished Bar now also boasts a separate food bar and a dance hall. The Kilberry Restaurant is self-service and accessible to all Navan racegoers with a selection of hot meals, soup, desserts and drinks. Other facilities include the Bective Restaurant, private suites and function rooms and the Arkle Pavilion, open to members, owners and trainers.
The racecourse is approximately 30 miles from Dublin with an hourly bus service from Dublin Central Bus Station to the racecourse. The nearest railway station to the racecourse is in Drogheda, about 15 miles east of Navan with a bus or taxi ride to the track.
Tickets
You can buy your Navan admission tickets online with special packages advertised on the website. These include the Summer BBQ Package. You can also reserve your Trackside Bar Package or Bective Platinum Restaurant Package for the Winter meetings with early bird tickets generally available up to 2 months prior to the event.
The Effect of the Draw
There is a straight six furlong course for sprint races at Navan where a low draw is considered favourable. However, the draw is rarely a deciding factor on one of the fairest tracks in the country.
