Navan results — 5 September 2026

Summary

Yesterday at Navan (5 September 2026) produced a lively card with a mix of routine wins and a couple of notable incidents. Roeillaun (13:30) and Flower Forest (15:45) both recorded convincing victories for Noel Meade and A P O’Brien respectively, while African Affair sprung a major surprise at 40/1 in the 16:20 (Div I) handicap. The 14:00 nursery ended in drama as Lars Soldier prevailed despite the rider losing irons late on; the colt showed plenty of heart to lead on the line. There were also a number of non-runners and veterinary withdrawals across the meeting (travel problems, declared in error, skin allergy and reserves), and Gulf Beat pulled up in the finale.

Key notes from the day

– Upset of the day: African Affair (40/1) produced a determined front-running effort to score in the 16:20, one of the bigger-priced winners on the card.
– Incident: Lars Soldier (14:00) kept on strongly to win despite the jockey losing irons late; a remarkable bit of resolute riding and finishing from the pair.
– Withdrawals and issues: Agostino was a non-runner due to travel problems; several other named horses were withdrawn as reserves or for medical reasons; Gulf Beat was pulled up in the 17:30.

Overall the card combined solid performances from established yards with a couple of dramatic moments — most notably the long-odds success of African Affair and the stewards’ eye-catching finish in the nursery when Lars Soldier prevailed despite equipment issues.

Racecourse Guide

Racing was first staged at Navan in 1920 and many a great horse has graced the turf at the Grade 1 track. These include Champion Hurdlers Hardy Eustace and Brave Inca and the legendary Champion Chaser Moscow Flyer, twice successful in the Fortria Chase.

Navan is a left-handed track of a mile and a quarter with sweeping bends and a stiff uphill climb to the winning line. The home straight is around three and a half furlongs and many horses have faltered in the closing stages so stamina is a key factor under both codes. Many of Ireland’s finest hurdlers and chasers will race here on route to the big festivals in spring.

The Vintage Crop Stakes is named after Dermot Weld’s 1993 Melbourne Cup winner. It was first run in 2003 and is now established as a trial for the Ascot Gold Cup. Record four times Ascot winner Yeats won this race in 2007 and 2008.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Navan offers a wide range of hospitality starting with the Racecourse Café, kitted out with relaxing furnishings and TV screens for those wishing to view the action with the comfort of a hot drink and a snack. There is also a covered picnic area.

The Troytown Café and Bar is located beneath the Grandstand and a short walk from the parade ring. The recently refurbished Bar now also boasts a separate food bar and a dance hall. The Kilberry Restaurant is self-service and accessible to all Navan racegoers with a selection of hot meals, soup, desserts and drinks. Other facilities include the Bective Restaurant, private suites and function rooms and the Arkle Pavilion, open to members, owners and trainers.

The racecourse is approximately 30 miles from Dublin with an hourly bus service from Dublin Central Bus Station to the racecourse. The nearest railway station to the racecourse is in Drogheda, about 15 miles east of Navan with a bus or taxi ride to the track.

Tickets

You can buy your Navan admission tickets online with special packages advertised on the website. These include the Summer BBQ Package. You can also reserve your Trackside Bar Package or Bective Platinum Restaurant Package for the Winter meetings with early bird tickets generally available up to 2 months prior to the event.

The Effect of the Draw

There is a straight six furlong course for sprint races at Navan where a low draw is considered favourable. However, the draw is rarely a deciding factor on one of the fairest tracks in the country.
