Newcastle results — 2 June 2026
TAPETA: STANDARD at Newcastle produced a competitive evening of sprint and middle-distance handicaps on 2 June. Gemini Man kicked off the winners, showing a strong late surge to land the Living North Magazines Classified Stakes, while Rubellite and Dontwaste A Moment both delivered resolute victories in tight finishes at 18:45 and 19:15 respectively. Auntie Jo and Criminal Shore impressed with well-timed headway to win their handicaps, and the night ended with a big-priced success as Dinah Myte (40/1) edged clear in the Penny Hotels Handicap.
Key events
Gemini Man (Iain Jardine / Andrew Mullen) made the running when it mattered, pushing on to lead inside the final furlong and holding on comfortably. Rubellite (Stephen Hanlon / Conor Whiteley) showed determination to fend off Havachoc after idling briefly in the closing stages. Dontwaste A Moment (Ivan Furtado / Barry McHugh) made all and, according to the trainer, may have benefited from dropping back to 5f from 7f. Auntie Jo (David O’Meara / Conor Whiteley) produced a smooth, well-timed move to take the Penny On The Move Handicap, while Criminal Shore (David O’Meara / Paul Mulrennan) produced a late, strong finish to claim the Penny Car Washes Handicap. The day’s biggest shock came when Dinah Myte (John Gallagher / George Bass) landed the 20:45 at 40/1, storming to the lead in the final 110yds.

Additional notes
There were two self-certified non-runners: Let’s Go Hugo and Bantz were declared non-runners due to stone bruises. Hyrcanian was withdrawn after unseating the jockey and being loose before the start. All other scheduled contests went ahead and produced finishing orders as above.
Trainers to watch: David O’Meara saddled two winners on the card (Auntie Jo and Criminal Shore), and Iain Jardine continued a productive patch with Gemini Man’s success.
Racecourse Guide
Known locally as Gosforth Park, Newcastle provides a high standard of action under both codes. The Flat course with its uphill rise of four furlongs makes this one of the stiffest tracks in the country and the highlight of the season is undoubtedly the Northumberland Plate in June – a fiercely battled staying handicap.

The Effect of the Draw
There seems to be a slight bias towards high drawn stalls in sprints, but over the 7f and 1m straight course there is plenty of time for horses to get themselves sorted out and galloping, so the draw isn’t as big a deal.
