Race notes
Going: TAPETA — Standard to Slow. Notable non-runners and withdrawals included Heavenly Heather (self certificate) in the Chipchase card, Taj Mahal Palace (withdrawn — upset in stalls) from the novice, and Free World and Cavalry Call recorded as self-certificates/off feed prior to the Pertemps Educational Handicap. Riders to note: Daniel Muscutt rode a double (Align The Stars and Barnaby Rudge) and William Buick also landed a double (Believitanducan and Tuco Salamanca).
For bettors and followers of the meeting, the card produced value winners at bigger prices alongside a Group 3 success for Paborus. Full finishing margins and detailed stewards’ notes will appear in official result sheets where available.
Racecourse Guide
Known locally as Gosforth Park, Newcastle provides a high standard of action under both codes. The Flat course with its uphill rise of four furlongs makes this one of the stiffest tracks in the country and the highlight of the season is undoubtedly the Northumberland Plate in June – a fiercely battled staying handicap.

The Effect of the Draw
There seems to be a slight bias towards high drawn stalls in sprints, but over the 7f and 1m straight course there is plenty of time for horses to get themselves sorted out and galloping, so the draw isn’t as big a deal.
