Today's Newcastle Tips, Racecards And Results
Newcastle — Results (20 August 2026)
Newcastle staged a competitive Tapeta card on 20 August 2026 with several tight finishes and a couple of late non-runners in the opening handicap. Niffler (13/8) set the tone in the Harry Potter Droneart Show Handicap after a patient ride from Luke Morris, while Spirited Gesture (1/6) produced the expected authoritative display in the 19:24 novice stakes. Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Star Of Commala (85/40) held off the short-priced Queen’s Hame (8/15) in the fillies’ restricted novice; that race provided one of the more notable results when an outsider led and repelled the favourite. The juvenile nurseries and handicaps produced fine margins – This Moment just held on in the nursery, Lethal Nymph edged Changeofmind by a short head and Get Up Everybody prevailed late in the concluding handicap. Two horses listed as non-runners in the opener (Carwyn and Star Of Markinch) were withdrawn on veterinary/self-certification grounds.
Key takeaways
Tapeta handling again proved important: several winners came from holding positions off the pace before striking in the final furlong. Short-priced Spirited Gesture justified favouritism, while Long odds-change stories included Changeofmind (22/1) finishing a close second to Lethal Nymph. The card featured close finishes throughout, with margins ranging from short-heads to a few lengths.

Newcastle Race Results
Newcastle stages around sixty race meetings during the year, making it one of the busiest racecourses in the country. It has an all-weather track for regular flat meetings and a turf track for top quality National Hunt racing.
The Northumberland Plate over two miles, known locally as the Pitmen’s Derby, takes centre stage in June. It is one of the most fiercely contested staying handicaps of the season. Other significant flat races at Newcastle include the Gosforth Park Cup, the Listed Burradon Stakes and the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes.
Over the jumps, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle takes place at the end of November and is the only Grade 1 event at the track. This has been won by many of the sports leading hurdlers including Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon. The Eider Chase in February is considered a Grand National trial and the last horse to go on to win at Aintree in the same season was Comply Or Die in 2008.
GG provide detailed Newcastle race results as quickly as possible. The winner, placed horses and SP returns are published as soon as the weigh in is confirmed. This is updated with the complete finishing order which can be accessed by clicking on each race title.
Racecourse Guide
Horse racing in the north east dates as far back as the early 17th Century. The inaugural Northumberland Plate took place at Town Moor in 1833 and was transferred to the current site at Gosforth Park in 1882. The flat turf track was replaced by a floodlit all-weather surface in 2016 as part of an £11 million redevelopment.
There all-weather track has a left-handed circuit of over a mile and a half and a straight mile. The round track has long sweeping turns so it is vital to get as close to rail as possible or risk forfeiting a lot of ground.
The National Hunt course at Newcastle is a left-handed, galloping track with a long uphill finish. Stamina is the key factor in the staying chasers like the four-mile Eider Chase, particularly when the going is soft. The fences are tough but fair and trainers regard is at a suitable introduction for a novice.

The course boasts 21 private hospitality boxes, each offering panoramic views of the racecourse. The marquee option can be customised to suit your requirements with exclusive packages available on selected race days.
Newcastle Central Station is only fifteen minutes from the racecourse. There is a free bus shuttle service in operation from Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro on all race days.
Tickets
You can book Newcastle race day packages and daily admission tickets online. The Grandstand Advance Ticket provides excellent views of the pre-parade ring and parade ring as well as the racing action. You will also have access to public bars and eateries. You can also book a 3 course meal at the Raceday Restaurant or choose from the splendid array of private hospitality packages which range from the Classic through to the Top Hat Package.
The Effect of the Draw
There is no significant draw bias on the straight course at Newcastle tip but a high draw can be a negative on the round course. Runners drawn wide in a large field concede a lot of ground to those racing on the inside.
