Yesterday’s all-weather card at Newcastle produced a string of competitive finishes with several taking the eye. Wardlaw (Sir Mark Prescott Bt/Luke Morris) opened the card with a narrow success, edging out Ernst Blofeld by a neck, while Ellie’s de Vega made all in the evening’s feature and Yaajooz landed a determined late run in the earlier handicap. There were notable non-runners and withdrawals on the night (Notimetotakeoff declared a non-runner in the nursery; Siviez and Moretons withdrawn on veterinary grounds; Victory Sound later also withdrawn), but the action on Tapeta delivered a series of fine performances — Beaumadier escaping to an emphatic early advantage and Lord Abama rallying late to take the finale.
Key moments and winners
Wardlaw kicked things off with a gritty display to hold on by a neck from Ernst Blofeld. Yaajooz produced a well-timed turn of foot to take the 17:30 contest, while Sandy Craic and Poppeye both found enough in the closing stages to get the job done in the two 18:00/18:30 handicaps. Northern Viola completed a smooth nursery success after a non-runner was withdrawn earlier in the card. Beaumadier delivered a front-running victory at big odds, and Ellie’s de Vega dominated the 20:00 handicap. Newcastle Race Results
Newcastle stages more than 80 race meetings a year, making it one of the busiest racecourses in the country. It has an all-weather track for regular flat meetings and a turf track for top quality National Hunt racing.
The Northumberland Plate over two miles, known locally as the Pitmen’s Derby, takes centre stage in June. It is one of the most fiercely contested staying handicaps of the season. Other significant flat races at Newcastle include the Gosforth Park Cup, the Listed Burradon Stakes and the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes.
Over the jumps, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle takes place at the end of November and is the only Grade 1 event at the track. This has been won by many of the sport’s leading hurdlers including Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon. The Eider Chase in February is considered a Grand National trial and the last horse to go on to win at Aintree in the same season was Comply Or Die in 2008.

Racecourse Guide
Horse racing in the north east dates as far back as the early 17th Century. The inaugural Northumberland Plate took place at Town Moor in 1833 and was transferred to the current site at Gosforth Park in 1882. The flat turf track was replaced by a floodlit Tapeta all-weather surface in 2016 as part of an investment of nearly £12 million.
The all-weather track has a left-handed circuit of over a mile and a half and a straight mile. The round track has long sweeping turns so it is vital to get as close to the rail as possible or risk forfeiting a lot of ground.
The National Hunt course at Newcastle is a left-handed, galloping track with a long uphill finish. Stamina is the key factor in the staying chasers like the Eider Chase, run over 4m1f up to 2026 and about 3m6f from 2027, particularly when the going is soft. The fences are tough but fair and trainers regard it as a suitable introduction for a novice.

Newcastle Central Station is only fifteen minutes from the racecourse. On selected feature days a shuttle bus runs from the Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro stations, which are about two miles from the racecourse.
Tickets
You can book Newcastle race day packages and daily admission tickets online. A Grandstand admission ticket gives access to the Grandstand and the parade ring, so you can watch all the racing action, along with the public bars, eateries and betting outlets in the Grandstand. You can also book a 3 course meal at the Raceday Restaurant or choose from the private hospitality packages, which range from Classic box hospitality on regular race days to the Flat Cap, Fascinator and Top Hat packages on selected race days.
The Effect of the Draw
There is no significant draw bias on the straight course at Newcastle but a high draw can be a negative on the round course. Runners drawn wide in a large field concede a lot of ground to those racing on the inside.
