Newton Abbot — Result Report (28 October 2026)

Yesterday at Newton Abbot the going was GOOD TO SOFT (soft in places; 4.7). The card produced a string of close finishes and a number of notable performances: Real Quartz and Star Of Affinity both prevailed in tight two-horse battles, Mask Of Zorro dominated the novices’ chase from the front, and Par Avion rounded off the day with a comfortable success in the bumper.

Key events and winners

Real Quartz edged out Vol Royale after a sustained duel, while Star Of Affinity held off It’s A Breeze by a neck in the female jockeys’ chase. Paddockwood took the Passage House Hotel South Devon Gateway Hurdle after a strong late move, and The Four Sixes prevailed in the Persimmon Homes Handicap Chase in similarly competitive fashion. Mask Of Zorro made all in the Sky Sports Racing Novices’ Handicap Chase, and Harry Fry’s Par Avion landed the National Hunt Flat race readily. There were a handful of non-runners via self-certification and one pulled-up runner, but no full-race abandonments.

Racecourse Guide

Newton Abbot racecourse is north of the bank of the River Teign in Devon and is established as one of the leading summer jumps courses. It is England’s most westerly racecourse, a sharp, left handed track of around nine furlongs. The fences are relatively easy to navigate but they are quite close together with seven to each circuit.

The course is ideal for former flat racers with speed often holding the edge over stamina. There is a very short run-in so it is very difficult to make up ground after jumping the last. Long striding National Hunt bred horses are not ideally suited to Newton Abbot which keeps horses constantly on the turn.

The listed Lord Mildmay Memorial Handicap Chase was discontinued after the 2015 renewal. That race had been won by subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Take The Stand (2004) and Grade 1 Betfair Chase winner Snoopy Loopy (2008). Newton Abbot can still produce a useful novice chaser and is a happy hunting ground for Ditcheat Trainer Paul Nicholls.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Hospitality at Newton Abbot caters for all tastes and pockets from the Paddock Restaurant through to the private boxes. Each corporate box comes with a viewing balcony opposite the winning line with unlimited tea and coffee plus a range of buffet packages. Newton Abbot vows that wherever you are on the racecourse, you will never be far from great food outlets and bars.

Newton Abbot Railway Station is within three-quarters of a mile of the track and is on the mainline from London Paddington. There is a free shuttle bus in operation on race days between the Railway Station and the racecourse.

Tickets

Ladies’ Day towards the end of June is always well-attended, as is Family Fun Day on a Sunday in July. There are also very popular evening meetings during the summer and booking admission in advance (by the night before the fixture) saves money on the gate price. Course enclosure tickets purchased by disabled patrons plus one carer will automatically be upgraded to Paddock Admission with proof of disability, for example Blue Badge holders.
