Pontefract Race Results
Pontefract stages flat racing in West Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the stiffest tracks in the country. Significant races include the Pontefract Castle Stakes, one of five listed races held at the course. Famous Pontefract winners include Luca Cumani’s 1998 Derby winner High Rise and the popular stayer Brown Panther.

Racecourse Guide
Pontefract is one of the most popular tracks in the north of England and produces many course specialists. Originally a horse shoe shaped track of a mile and a half, it was extended to form a complete two-mile circuit in 1983. It is the longest continuous horse racing circuit anywhere in Europe.
The left-handed undulating track has a stiff uphill finish of three furlongs, putting the emphasis firmly on stamina in the staying races. By contrast, front runners are ideally suited to this track in sprints where an inside, low draw is important.
Listed races at Pontefract include The Pipalong Stakes and The Flying Fillies’ Stakes in August and The Pomfret Stakes in July. The Marathon Handicap in April over two miles and five and a half furlongs is one of the longest flat races in the calendar. The Silver Tankard Stakes is the final Listed race of the season in October. There are also Family Sundays and popular Friday evening meetings throughout the summer and Ladies Day in August.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
There are a wide range of dining options available to choose from at Pontefract. Mobile units around the course ensure ready access to the traditional course favourite of fish and chips. At the other end of the scale you can enjoy the racing and fine dining from the comfort of a luxury private box. The Dalby Stand houses 18 private boxes which can accommodate 10 to 150 people. The Pipalong Room is the only box in the Main Stand and holds up to 25 people.
Buses run hourly from Leeds to Pontefract Racecourse on race days. Rail passengers arriving via Wakefield should alight at Pontefract Tanshelf Station, adjacent to the racecourse. Nearby Monkhill, Baghill and Glasshoughton Stations all have frequent bus and taxi services running on race days.

Tickets are available to purchase online for all enclosures at Pontefract. Grandstand and Paddock bookings and Premier Enclosure Group bookings of 10 or more get one free badge using the code advertised on the website. Premier Gold tickets offer a range of prices and benefits including a table for the day in the Park Suite Restaurant with food. The budget booking is for the Picnic Enclosure and you can also reserve a parking spot in the Picnic Enclosure Car Park.
The Effect of the Draw
Low numbers should do best here, purely because the course turns left all the way, but that doesn't work out in practice. Indeed, high numbers are best when the going is heavy, as the ground on the inside rail soon gets chewed up. In testing conditions, jockeys tend to steer their mounts away from the rail in search of better ground.
