Pointers: keep an eye on horses with proven Redcar form and small-sample high strike rates (Raulin, Mrs Trump). Trainers Fahey and Kevin Philippart De Foy look particularly efficient here — if they run on the card they merit early consideration. For larger fields, favour jockeys with strong place percentages (Callum Rodriguez, Jason Hart) when compiling each-way lists.

The Zetland Gold Cup in May is always a very competitive handicap over ten furlongs and is the highlight of the opening day of the Spring Bank Holiday meeting. Redcar also hosts several family race days with free entertainment and a popular Ladies’ Day.

Racecourse Guide
Redcar in North Yorkshire is a flat, left-handed course of a mile and three-quarters. The turns are quite sharp but the long home straight allows plenty of time for slow starters to get a clear run. There is a straight mile and Redcar attracts runners from many of the top yards in the country. Notable past winners at Redcar include Pipalong, Top Notch Tonto and Limato.
Front runners are favoured when the ground is riding fast but it can become a proper stamina test when the ground rides soft or heavy. The weights for the Two-year-old Trophy are decided on the stock value of the sire rather than form so frequently attracts Group class juveniles racing on favourable terms.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
The Petch Stand Private Boxes are ideal for parties of 8 to 16 guests with floor to ceiling windows allowing a clear view across the racecourse. There are three hospitality packages on offer ranging from buffet to fine dining.
The Crow’s Nest Restaurant is the ultimate package with a table for the day and a three-course meal. This package can accommodate parties of 2-10 people with larger parties welcome on adjacent tables. The Voltigeur Restaurant offers an a la carte menu and there is no need to book. There are also plenty of food and drink outlets around the course at all race meetings.
The racecourse is in the centre of Redcar and is just a few minutes’ walk from Redcar Central Station. There are regular services linking the rest of the Tees Valley as well as the East Coast Main Line from Darlington.
Tickets
You can book race day packages and daily admission tickets online. This is cheaper than paying at the gate on the day with the discount ending at midnight on the day before the meeting. Tickets can be booked for the Course Enclosure or Grandstand Enclosure. The Grandstand Ticket provides excellent views of the Parade Ring, Racecourse and Winners’ Enclosure.
The Effect of the Draw
Races from five furlongs to a mile are run on the straight course at Redcar. Middle drawn horses tend to do best over five and six furlongs as jockeys tend to favour the centre of the track rather than either rail. There is no draw bias for races over seven furlongs or a mile.
