Sedgefield — Results (1 April 2026)

Sunny, drying ground greeted the runners at Sedgefield yesterday (going: GOOD — good to soft in places; watered; 6.9) and produced several decisive performances across the card. Maple took the early 14:40 handicap hurdle after being held up and sustaining a well-timed run to collar the leader late, while Stratagem powered clear in the 15:10 chase to score by a wide margin. Clean Getaway prevailed in a competitive 15:40 handicap chase, and Bright Legend made all in the 16:10 maiden hurdle. Cosmic Soul delivered a comfortable success in the 16:40 handicap, and Connells Cross closed the day with a determined victory in the 17:10 national hunt flat race. The meeting also saw a couple of incidents: Mountain Mike fell in the chase, Diamond Jim unseated early in the card, and two horses (Beep Beep Becky and Hillsteels Blue) were withdrawn as unsuitable for the ground.

Race-by-race highlights

14:40 — Maple (Ruth Jefferson / Theo Gillard) came from the rear to lead approaching the last and held on to take the Sedgefield Racecourse Supports Autism In Racing Handicap Hurdle by 1½ lengths. 15:10 — Stratagem (Mickey Bowen / Shane Fenelon) produced the most emphatic success, taking the Sign Lead Your Horse To Water Handicap Chase and drawing well clear after the final obstacles. 15:40 saw Clean Getaway (Philip Kirby / Joe Williamson) grind out a narrow win in the Jayne And Greg Complete All The Racecourses Handicap Chase, while Bright Legend (Faye Bramley / Richie McLernon) dominated the Fairlight Studios Maiden Hurdle at odds-on. Cosmic Soul (Patrick Neville / William Maggs) impressed in the 16:40 MW Civils & Groundworks Handicap Hurdle, and Connells Cross (Jennie Candlish / Sean Quinlan) edged out The Gem State in the closing National Hunt flat contest.

Incidents and withdrawals

There were a few reminders of the game’s unpredictability: Mountain Mike fell in the early stages of the 15:10 chase and Diamond Jim unseated his rider at the second fence in the opening hurdle. Beep Beep Becky and Hillsteels Blue were both declared unsuitable for the ground and were withdrawn.

Overall, Sedgefield produced a strong day for several local trainers and gave the crowd a mixture of decisive wide-margin winners and tight finishes to enjoy.

Sedgefield Race Results

Sedgefield is an integral part of the Northern National Hunt scene with 20 fixtures each season. They race here every month bar June and July and the biggest race in the calendar is the Durham National in late October. The race is the highlight of Durham National Family Fun Day on a Sunday.

It is a handicap chase over three miles and five furlongs and was won for three successive seasons by 1979 Grand National winner Rubstic (1978-1980). Another notable Sedgefield winner was 1968 Grand National winner Red Alligator who won the Durham National the previous season. Sedgefield also stages a Ladies’ Evening and a popular Boxing Day card.

Racecourse Guide

Sedgefield is a left handed, undulating track and arguably one of the easiest jumping tracks in the country. There is a three furlong home straight with an uphill finish but there is only a short run-in from the last. The track favours fast, accurate jumpers and produces plenty of course specialists. Fatehalkhair won 13 times here including the Durham National during his career between 1995 and 2004.

The course can become quite testing in soft ground and jockeys often bring their horses over to the stands’ side in search of better ground. This applies to both hurdles and chase races with the ground closest to the rail proving to be something of a golden highway.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Sedgefield is set in the Durham countryside and has a reputation as a relaxed and friendly family venue. The course offers a superb choice of hospitality packages including stylish dining at their Raceday restaurants, the Hoops Bistro and Silks Restaurant. Both provide excellent views of the racecourse with guaranteed seating and superb quality cuisine.

You can also reserve the exclusive hospitality experience in one of Sedgefield’s private boxes, complete with a dedicated host and a delightful buffet. You will also have access to all public areas. The course provides Marquee hospitality and themed packages on selected race days. There are other food and drink outlets around the racecourse to suit every budget.

The closest railway stations to the course are Darlington and Durham. Both are about twenty minutes’ away from the track by either taxi or bus which are readily available on race days.

You can book your Sedgefield advance admission tickets online to make great savings. If booking 6 or more Grandstand tickets you can save an extra £2 per person. A Day at the Races ticket includes admission, a welcome drink and a traditional pie!
