Racing at Sedgefield on 18 October produced a competitive card on riding ground described as GOOD (7.2) throughout. Highlights included Royal Time landing the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase, Hay Max taking the maiden hurdle, Passengerontheship prevailing in the feature Durham National Handicap Chase and a big-priced success for Natural Ability in the Vickers Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle. There were several non-completions: notable falls and a number of pull-ups, and two declared runners were recorded as self-certified and did not go to post having been “not eaten up.”
Key events
Royal Time (7/1) produced a strong finish to take the Celebrating 40 Years of Vickers Bookmakers Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase, leading before the last and staying on well. Hay Max (13/2) led late under Brian Hughes to win the maiden hurdle, while Passengerontheship (9/2) held on in a tactical Durham National Handicap Chase. The big surprise came in the Vickers Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle where 40/1 shot Natural Ability dug deep to cling on by a short-head. There were a couple of late dramas: Out On Her Own fell at the last when threatening in the chase, Asa fell at the last in the handicap hurdle and several horses (Fortunate Fella, Kinbara Firstdraft, Ki Woo and Miss Friday Lions) were pulled up.

Sedgefield Race Results
Sedgefield is an integral part of the Northern National Hunt scene with around 17 fixtures each season. They race here every month except May, June and July and the biggest race in the calendar is the Durham National in October. The race is the highlight of Durham National Family Fun Day on a Sunday.
It is a handicap chase over three miles and five furlongs and was won for three successive seasons by 1979 Grand National winner Rubstic (1978-1980). Another notable Sedgefield winner was 1968 Grand National winner Red Alligator who won the Durham National the previous season. Sedgefield also stages a Ladies’ Evening and a Christmas Jumper Day meeting in the week before Christmas.

Racecourse Guide
Sedgefield is a left handed, undulating track and arguably one of the easiest jumping tracks in the country. There is a three furlong home straight with an uphill finish but there is only a short run-in from the last. The track favours fast, accurate jumpers and produces plenty of course specialists. Fatehalkhair won 13 times here including the Durham National during his career between 1995 and 2004.
The course can become quite testing in soft ground and jockeys often bring their horses over to the stands’ side in search of better ground. This applies to both hurdles and chase races with the ground closest to the rail proving to be something of a golden highway.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Sedgefield is set in the Durham countryside and has a reputation as a relaxed and friendly family venue. The course offers a superb choice of hospitality packages including stylish dining at their Raceday restaurants, the Hoops Bistro and Silks Restaurant. Both provide excellent views of the racecourse with guaranteed seating and superb quality cuisine.
You can also reserve the exclusive hospitality experience in one of Sedgefield’s private boxes, complete with a dedicated host and a delightful buffet. You will also have access to all public areas. The course provides Marquee hospitality and themed packages on selected race days. There are other food and drink outlets around the racecourse to suit every budget.
The closest railway stations to the course are Darlington and Durham. Both are about twenty minutes’ away from the track by either taxi or bus which are readily available on race days.
Tickets
You can book your Sedgefield advance admission tickets online to make great savings. Early Bird and Advance prices are cheaper than paying on the gate, and parties of 10 or more who book together get money off each ticket. A Day at the Races package includes admission with food and drink.
