Sligo Race Results
Although racing in the area can be traced back to 1781, the first Sligo races to be staged at the current venue of Cleveragh took place in 1955. It followed a gap of 13 years since the Hazelwood course was closed in 1942, although two Sligo fixtures had taken place on the Newbrook course outside Mullingar. Sligo now stages nine race days per year with three flat meetings and six over jumps.
GG will provide detailed Sligo race results from all nine meetings as quickly as possible. We also list all of yesterday’s results and you can see the complete finishing order by clicking on each race title. Information displayed includes jockey colours, draw, weights, official ratings and days since the horse last ran.
Racecourse Guide
Sligo is one of Ireland’s unsung heroes - a small country track nestled into a beautiful part of the country with a stunning, mountainous backdrop and host to nine meetings a year across both flat and national hunt disciplines. Sligo racecourse is quite a sharp track of just a mile long, right handed, with a gradual incline to the finish.
Despite the uphill finish, the course generally favours speed horses, although front-runners can sometimes pay for going too fast if pestered for the lead. The track is in a natural bowl so the ground can get particularly heavy, especially for the jumps fixtures. Sligo is well known for producing course specialists so previous form at the track is a definite plus.
Racing here is competitive and popular meetings include the two-day August Festival which often sees some of the Galway festival die-hards continuing their celebrations onto this neighbouring county. The meeting opens with a flat racing evening on Diageo Day and the second day is Sligo Races Ladies Day which is always well-attended.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Sligo has undergone considerable improvements since 2013 including a new Grandstand and an overhaul of the course’s infrastructure. This featured a new two-storey hospitality building overlooking the parade ring and track housing a public restaurant and spacious bar.
Suites can be reserved for 2 to 10 people and include satellite TV with the day’s racing piped into the room. Special pre-paid packages are available for groups of 10 or more which also include a burger and beverage. The track also boasts an excellent eatery and snack bar and is great for close-up views of the racing action.
Tickets
You can book your tickets online for each of the nine race days or buy a special discounted season ticket. General Admission Day tickets are available with discounts offered for groups of 10 or more racegoers. The special hospitality package includes a 2 course meal in a reserved area of the public restaurant plus a glass of wine or prosecco.
The Effect of the Draw
As a right-handed course, one might think high numbers should be favoured, but that is not the case. If anything, runners who come down the centre in the home straight have the advantage.
