Today's Southwell Tips, Racecards And Results
Southwell — meeting summary (yesterday)
The Southwell meeting ran on Good (Good to soft in places; watered; 6.8) ground and produced a number of decisive performances, headed by Duke Of Luckley’s bold front-running display in the 14:30 chase and Dan Skelton’s Beorma completing the card in the 17:30 novices’ handicap. There were also notable wins for Ceolwulf, Lairig Mor, Kingofthefrontier, Larkfield Lusive and Squeezebox, while several runners failed to complete their races (including a fall for Mr Mahler and an unseat for Henry Box Brown) and a couple of declared non-runners were withdrawn on veterinary grounds.
Key events
Duke Of Luckley (11/1) made all in the opener and was untroubled after taking control early, beating Pep Talking by around 15 lengths. The 15:00 Book The Bistro Chase saw Ceolwulf (9/4) take over from the front 3 out and stay on to win by three lengths, a race that also featured a fall (Mr Mahler) and an unseat (Henry Box Brown). Lairig Mor landed the bumper impressively, Kingofthefrontier justified favouritism in the maiden hurdle and Larkfield Lusive and Squeezebox produced strong late runs to claim their respective handicaps. Beorma (8/13) finished the meeting with a comfortable success in the closing novices’ handicap.
Incidents and non-runners
There were a number of non-completions: Hawk’s Rock and Innisfree Lass were both declared non-runners (withdrawn on veterinary/self-certificate issues), Maggie’s Boy, The Hostage, Butchers Bill and Mythical were pulled up, Henry Box Brown unseated his rider, and Mr Mahler fell two out in the 15:00. Riders and connections will review those incidents ahead of the next meetings.

Additional notes
Harry Skelton rode a smart double on the card (Beorma and a placed ride on Jafimgoso), while Danny McMenamin also rode a winner later in the meeting after an earlier fall on Mr Mahler. The going remained consistent throughout the afternoon, which aided several front-running and returning horses. Connections will now plan targets for the winners based on their performance and the conditions they handled well here.

Southwell Race Results
Southwell is one of the busiest racecourses in the country with around fifty flat meetings on the all-weather as well as National Hunt meetings on turf. The first official Southwell race meetings took place in the mid 1800’s at Burgage Green. Racing opened on the existing site in 1897 but the most significant landmark in Southwell’s history was the opening of the all-weather track in November 1989.
Southwell is part of the All-Weather Championship season which is made up of 200 fixtures during the winter months. The climax of the series is the £1 million All-Weather Championships which are held at Lingfield at Easter. The track does not boast any major meetings but Family Fun Day in July and Ladies Day in August are always popular.

Racecourse Guide
Southwell is a left handed, oval track of a mile and a quarter with a run-in of three furlongs. There is a chute at the end of the straight for five furlong sprint races. Southwell’s all-weather used to have a fibresand surface before switching to Tapeta in 2021. Tapeta is a mixture of sand, wax and fibre which is not as deep as fibresand and therefore creates less kick-back.
Southwell’s jumps turf track is on the outside of the turf course and tends to favour speed horses on good or fast ground. However, the reverse is true in soft ground when the combination of slower ground and stiff fences puts the emphasis on stamina.
Southwell has produced several course specialists including La Estrella who retired at the age of fifteen after winning 16 races here. Tempering who won a record 22 times here. Although he raced 127 times, he only won once away from his beloved Southwell when winning his maiden on turf.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Southwell racecourse offers a range of hospitality options to provide you with an unforgettable day at the races. The Seasons Restaurant is set within the Premier Enclosure with views either trackside or over the parade ring.
The Minster Suite can be reserved for private functions with a private balcony and catering from 80 up to 240 guests. Marquee Hospitality and Themed packages are available on selected race days. There are also numerous food and drink outlets around the course to suit every budget.
Southwell racecourse is in Rolleston, about 2 miles east of the town of Southwell in Nottinghamshire. Rolleston Railway Station is adjacent to the course with direct train services from Nottingham and Newark.
Tickets
Southwell advance Grandstand admission tickets can be purchased online with a saving of £2 per person when booking for 6 or more. You can also book the special Day at the Races package which includes a welcome drink, racecard and a traditional pie!
The Effect of the Draw
A low to middle draw used to have an advantage in five furlong races on fibresand but this no longer seems to apply. It is possible to come from off the pace on the Tapeta surface with no discernible draw bias.
