    Taunton Tips and Today’s Races

    Taunton Race Results

    The Weatherbys Portman Cup Chase is one of the course’s top races and takes place on Taunton’s only Saturday meeting in January. Taunton Racecourse was built on land granted for the purpose by Viscount Portman in 1927. It was the last new racecourse to be opened in Britain until Great Leighs in 2008 and the dual purpose track at Ffos Las in 2009.

    There are regular jumps meetings at Taunton between the end of October and the end of April. The increasingly popular Ladies’ Day meeting is held in early April.     Racecourse Guide

    Taunton is a sharp, right handed oval track of around ten furlongs with two long straights and tight bends. The fences do not appear particularly daunting but the volume of fallers here is surprisingly high. There is a downhill run to the third last fence which can catch out an inexperienced jumper.

    Stamina is also a factor to consider at Taunton, especially on soft ground. Meetings here are often dominated by the local trainers, notably Paul Nicholls who runs many of his good horses here. A country track through and through, the venue is very popular with the locals and exudes a friendly atmosphere.

    Famous past Taunton winners include Rooster Booster, Penzance and Well Chief. The inaugural Weatherbys Portman Chase in 2019 was won by Royal Vacation who defeated a high class field which included Grand National runner-up The Last Samuri and two time Scottish Grand National winner Vicente. Nicholls sent out his 3,000th career winner here in Capitaine in the 2019 Greene King Handicap Hurdle.

    Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

    Taunton offers a range of hospitality options, unlimited free parking, on site catering and bars. This beautiful location can accommodate private parties from 10 to 200. Fine dining is available at the Orchard, Paddock Restaurant and Saddle Room. The latter is a café style restaurant in the Orchard Stand which provides fish and chips, pies and the usual race day favourites. The Paddock Restaurant provides a fantastic 2 course lunch while The Orchard Restaurant is a first class dining experience overlooking the course.

    Taunton Racecourse is two miles south of the town in Orchard Portman, Somerset. Taunton Railway Station is 3 miles from the course with a courtesy shuttle bus operating on race days from two hours before the first race and departing half an hour after the finale.

    Tickets

    Taunton Admission Tickets allow access to all areas apart from the members stand and private hospitality boxes. They include both Grandstands and the Parade Ring, as well as the Orchard and Saddle Room Restaurants. Raceday Packages include a food and drink voucher for a small snack with a drink and a racecard.
