Key moments and winners
Taunton’s card yesterday produced a string of decisive performances on good, watered ground (7.3). The opener saw Crest Of Stars (15/8) strike back to beat the favourite Kilnew Supreme after a sustained duel, while Paul Nicholls’ Jena D’Oudairies (13/2) edged out a battling Poet’s Muse in the mares’ handicap. Taritino (7/4) put daylight between himself and his rivals in the Ron Hatton Memorial, and Little Lady Lucy (6/5) made all in the Dave Criddle Travel Handicap Hurdle. Noble Blue (7/4) held on after taking control in the closing stages of the Charles Clark Memorial and the short-priced favourite Modern Style (2/5) completed the evening with a comfortable success in the finale.
There were a few non-runners and pulled-up horses noted on the card (Portcammon declared unsuitable, Tobi Kanobee self-certified on temperature; Pillar The Poet and Pooley’s Promise both pulled up), but the main talking points were the front-running displays and a number of accurate rides from local jockeys delivering at key moments.

Taunton Race Results
The Portman Cup, a marathon handicap chase over about three and a half miles, is one of the course’s top races and is being revived with new conditions as the feature of the Barber’s 1833 Portman Cup Raceday in February 2027. Taunton Racecourse was built on land granted for the purpose by Viscount Portman in 1927. It was the last new racecourse to be opened in Britain until Great Leighs in 2008 and the dual purpose track at Ffos Las in 2009.
There are regular jumps meetings at Taunton between mid-November and late April. The increasingly popular Ladies’ Day is an evening meeting which closes the season in late April. Racecourse Guide
Taunton is a sharp, right handed oval track of around ten furlongs with two long straights and tight bends. The fences do not appear particularly daunting but the volume of fallers here is surprisingly high. There is a downhill run to the third last fence which can catch out an inexperienced jumper.
Stamina is also a factor to consider at Taunton, especially on soft ground. Meetings here are often dominated by the local trainers, notably Paul Nicholls who runs many of his good horses here. A country track through and through, the venue is very popular with the locals and exudes a friendly atmosphere.
Famous past Taunton winners include Rooster Booster, Penzance and Well Chief. The 2019 Weatherbys Portman Cup Chase was won by Royal Vacation who defeated a high class field which included Grand National runner-up The Last Samuri and two time Scottish Grand National winner Vicente. Nicholls sent out his 3,000th career winner here in Capitaine in the 2019 Greene King Handicap Hurdle.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
Taunton offers a range of hospitality options, unlimited free parking, on site catering and bars. This beautiful location can accommodate private parties from 10 to 200. The Orchard Restaurant is a first class dining experience overlooking the course. The Paddock Restaurant provides a fantastic 2 course lunch but is exclusive to racecourse members and to owners and trainers with a runner on the day. The Exmoor Suite offers a reserved table with a light buffet, while the Saddle Room is a walk-in café style restaurant in the Orchard Stand which provides fish and chips, pies and the usual race day favourites. The Trackside Coffee Shop at the front of the Orchard Stand serves coffee and hot and cold food.
Taunton Racecourse is two miles south of the town in Orchard Portman, Somerset. Taunton Railway Station is around two miles from the course, and on race days a free shuttle bus leaves the station 90 minutes before the first race and returns half an hour after the finale.

Taunton Admission Tickets allow access to all areas apart from the members stand and private hospitality boxes.
