    Racecourse Guide

    A mile and a quarter, oval track, Thirsk most definitely favours those horses can lie handy as the ground often rides on the fast side and the course dips just before the final furlong. On this basis, big, galloping types who take longer to find their full stride are at a marked disadvantage. The Classic Trial in April and the Thirsk Hunt Cup in May are the two most significant races staged at the track.

    For a finer, premium experience there are multiple hospitality options available at Ayr. These include a Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea experience, a Fresh Platter Package, The Hambleton Dining Rooms and the Thomas Lord Suite. 

    For those wishing to have a more private dining experience, there is the option of the Private Boxes. The boxes are located on the second floor of the Hambleton Stand, right opposite the Winning Post, and offer stunning views of the racecourse. Private Boxes include a variety of catering options to suit all parties and the option of an inclusive drinks package. 

    Tickets

    There are two ticket options available at Ayr racecourse:

    • Grandstand, Paddock & Picnic Enclosure. Offers a prime grandstand viewing adjacent to the Winning Post. Also access to exclusive restaurant options and the most comprehensive bar choices.  
    • Premier Enclosure. Provides a good viewing platform for the races, with access to the Parade Ring and Winner’s Enclosure. Also has a permanent adventure playground for children to enjoy, and a bandstand to enjoy live music throughout the day. There is also the option of a park and view ticket, which admits your car plus up to four adults to a specific trackside area in the Picnic Enclosure, where you can enjoy car-boot picnics during the racing. 

    The Effect of the Draw

    High numbers are best in sprints on firm ground, but low numbers are favoured on good to soft or softer. Low numbers are just about best over 6f 216yds and a mile. Concentrate on the top four stalls over 5f on firm ground and the bottom four stalls on soft ground (14+ runners).
