Thurles — Race day summary
At Thurles the testing ground (Hurdle – SOFT TO HEAVY; Chase – SOFT (Soft to heavy in places)) shaped the card and produced a day for bold front-runners and strong stayers. Willie Mullins dominated the big results with Karamoja, C’Est Ta Chance, Arslan and Blizzard Of Oz all successful, while Live To Laugh and Lough Nigara took the feature handicap honours. The going took its toll: Fancy Girl and Stormalong came down in the mares’ beginners’ chase, Fixios fell at the first in the maiden hurdle and several contenders were pulled up in the Duggan Veterinary Supplies Handicap Chase as stamina was tested on heavy ground.
Key moments
Karamoja (5/4) made all in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Beginners Chase, clear from four out and eased down to win under Paul Townend. Paul Townend doubled up in the Grade 3 Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase aboard C’Est Ta Chance, who took command approaching the last and drew clear. Arslan (4/7) justified favouritism in the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle, leading clear three out, while Blizzard Of Oz (9/4) battled on to deny Timeless Treaty in the Jimmy Neville & Aine Hurst Memorial Hurdle. In the competitive Duggan Veterinary Supplies Handicap Chase Live To Laugh (9/2) showed grit to lead after 2 out and score comfortably as many rivals tired. Lough Nigara (7/2) and Oaks Soldier fought out the EASYFIX Equine Handicap Hurdle, with Lough Nigara getting the verdict on the nod. On the flat Bon Bon Fizz (18/1) sprang a surprise in the Ryans Cleaning Flat Race, coming through late to win.

Thurles Race Results
There is a flat meeting here in late October which features the Moyne Handicap and the Littleton Handicap but Thurles is far better known for its quality steeplechasing. The most valuable meeting is a Sunday card in January which features the Grade 2 Kinloch Brae Chase and the Coolmore Mares Novice Chase. Don Cossack (2015 and 2016) and Sizing John (2017) both won the Kinloch Brae before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Allaho won this race in 2021 and 2022 before winning the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham.
The Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle takes place in February and the Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase is the main event in the late March fixture. The John Meagher Memorial Chase is staged in November. Regular Thursday meetings continue throughout the winter months.

Racecourse Guide
Thurles is a no-frills racecourse in County Tipperary which attracts a core of proper horse racing enthusiasts who enjoy high quality, competitive racing at a firm but fair course. Thurles is a right-handed, undulating track of about ten furlongs.
There are seven fences to be jumped on each circuit with a sharp descent into the two-furlong home straight before a steep uphill finish. There is a short run-in of about a furlong after the last fence and the course is best suited to sharp, efficient jumpers rather than long striding horses.
The course has certainly had its fair share of course specialists including Native Upmanship, successful in the Kinloch Brae in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Willie Mullins has a great record in the Coolmore Mares Novice Chase. His recent winners in this event include Vroum Vroum Mag (2015), Elimay (2020) and Colreevy (2021).
On the flat, 1993 Melbourne Cup winner Vintage Crop won his debut race at Thurles and went on to achieve greatness for Trainer Dermot Weld. This is a course to keep an eye on the maiden races in search for future Graded race winners.

Thurles prides itself on top quality food and friendly staff. The main bar is situated beside the parade ring which provides an exciting atmosphere in comfortable surroundings. The restaurant is adjacent to the main bar with an extensive range of hot food. The bacon and cabbage is a particular favourite with Thurles regulars! There are also soup and sandwiches available from the café under the stand and burgers from the BBQ.
Thurles Racecourse is only a mile west of the town centre. Thurles Railway Station is on the Dublin/Cork line and is about a mile from the track with a free shuttle bus service to and from the racecourse.
