Uttoxeter: Raceday report from yesterday
Uttoxeter served up a busy afternoon on good ground (described as GOOD, good to firm in places on the hurdle course with watering reported). The meeting featured several big performances and a couple of notable incidents: Imperial Data returned to form in the opener, Ice Jet dominated the chase easily, a long-priced Virtual Rock stunned the field in the 3.30, and Gaelic Rambler finished the card with a decisive staying chase win. There were a handful of non-runners and falls, including travel and ground-related withdrawals earlier in the card.
Key events and notes
- Going: GOOD (Good to firm in places on Hurdle course; watered; Chs 4.7, Hdl 5.1) — connections reported the easier ground helped a number of runners.
- Imperial Data (14:00) produced an improved effort, with the trainer noting first-time visors and the better ground as possible reasons for the resurgence.
- Nightflyer (14:30) made all in the maiden hurdle, holding off Jentobello close home.
- Ice Jet (15:00) was dominant in the Taverna Nights Handicap Chase, idling when clear and winning comfortably.
- Virtual Rock (15:30) provided one of the shocks of the day at 33/1, sticking on strongly after being pressed late.
- Mi Sueno (16:30) fell 5th; Diesel Line and others were declared non-runners due to unsuitable ground or self-certification.
- The finale saw Gaelic Rambler (17:05) assert himself approaching the last and go clear, giving Jonjo O’Neill Jr another big-race success at Uttoxeter.

Additional observations
Several horses failed to take part or ran into trouble: On The Fly was withdrawn with travel problems, Diesel Line and Martin’s Denuo were declared unsuitable on ground-related/administrative grounds, and Mi Sueno and Mr Rafiki both fell (Mi Sueno 5th, Mr Rafiki 1st). The meeting underlined how the drying ground can favour those with pace and a preference for quicker surfaces — Imperial Data and Virtual Rock were clear examples. Ice Jet’s effortless chase win keeps him firmly in the conversation for similar summer handicaps.

Uttoxeter Race Results
Uttoxeter is a National Hunt course in Staffordshire and home to the Midlands Grand National which traditionally follows the Cheltenham Festival. Famous winners include Grand National winner Rag Trade and subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winners The Thinker and Synchronised.

Racecourse Guide
Uttoxeter has re-invented itself in recent years as one of the UK’s most progressive tracks, with the Midlands National Meeting in March attracting many top-class performers. Uttoxeter is a sharp, left handed track of just over a mile and a quarter. There is a slight incline on the far side of the track before the runners swing downhill into the four furlong home straight.
The Midlands Grand National is over four and a quarter miles, one of the longest races in the calendar. The course can favour front-runners on good or fast ground but is becomes a gruelling stamina test in soft or heavy ground. It is not unusual for only a handful of Midlands National horses to complete the course in testing conditions. The 50th renewal in 2019 was won by the mud-loving Potters Corner. Uttoxeter attracts many of the top stables, particularly for the big March meeting, and is a standing dish of the national hunt season.
The Uttoxeter Summer Cup takes place on a Sunday in late June or early July. It was formerly over four miles and run as the Summer National but the distance was reduced and the race rebranded in 2012. Other popular race days include Ladies’ Night in June and Family Fun Day towards the end of July.

Uttoxeter is around 16 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and Derby with direct bus services on race days. Uttoxeter Railway Station is adjacent to the racecourse with a direct service from Crewe and connecting trains from Derby and Stoke-on-Trent.
