It was a busy afternoon at Wetherby on 14 October. Magnetude stamped authority on the Visit racingtv.com Juvenile Hurdle, while Rebel Tribesman and Virtual Rock produced a fine tussle in the Alison Stretton Birthday Handicap Hurdle with only a neck between them. Seeyainthesuninn took the Ginetta Clothing British Menswear Qualifier with a late surge, and Centurion’s Sister dominated the closing Watch Race Replays on Racing TV Handicap Hurdle to win comfortably. The card also saw a number of non-runners declared unsuitable for the firm ground and a couple of incidents: Fine Point fell in the penultimate contest and Valette was pulled up.

Jonathan Burke rode a double, partnering Magnetude to victory in the Juvenile Hurdle and then taking the Alison Stretton Handicap aboard Rebel Tribesman. Connections of several horses (Elm Creek, Cospicua, Pepite De Saphir and Magic Gloves) opted to withdraw due to the firm going. Seeyainthesuninn rallied strongly after dropping back mid-race to collar the leader at the last, while Centurion’s Sister made all and was eased close home.

Wetherby opened with the Visit racingtv.com Juvenile Hurdle where Magnetude (James Owen / Jonathan Burke) recovered from a slow jump mid-race to lead late and hold on comfortably. The Over The Rainbow Alison Stretton Birthday Handicap Hurdle produced a tight finish with Rebel Tribesman (Jamie Snowden / Jonathan Burke) prevailing by a neck over Virtual Rock. In the Ginetta Clothing British Menswear Handicap Hurdle (Go North Brindisi Breeze Series Qualifier) Seeyainthesuninn (Micky Hammond & Becky Smith / Alice Stevens) rallied from the rear to take the race, with Scottish Dancer running on for second. The card ended with Centurion’s Sister (Nicky Richards / Danny McMenamin) making all and winning readily. Several horses were declared unsuitable for the firm going and there were incidents to note — Fine Point fell and Valette was pulled up.

Wetherby Race Results
The Wetherby jump season kicks off in October with the Opening Meeting followed by the Charlie Hall Chase meeting in late October or early November. The featured event is one of the first big steeplechases of the season and often attracts Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders. The meeting also features the valuable West Yorkshire Hurdle and the Listed Mares’ Hurdle.
The 2-day Christmas fixture features the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase on Boxing Day and the Castleford Chase on 27th December. Flat racing currently takes place in April and June, and the June programme includes a popular Ladies’ Day.

Racecourse Guide
Wetherby has long been established as one of the leading northern National Hunt courses. The new Millennium Stand was officially opened in 2000 and in 2015 Wetherby staged its first flat race meeting.
Wetherby is a slightly undulating, left-handed track of about a mile and a half. The fences have a reputation for being quite daunting here, although they are not as severe as they once were. There are four fences to be jumped in the home straight and the track favours front runners, particularly on good or fast ground. A top class track and a stalwart fixture during the winter months.
The flat racing track also favours horses who like to race up with the pace. There is no straight sprint track at Wetherby with 5 1/2 furlong races starting from a chute near the end of the back straight. It is particularly important to get a good position before the turn into the home straight.
Dining, Hospitality & Facilities
The Wetherby Millennium Stand provides the very best in hospitality with stunning views extending beyond the race track and over the Yorkshire countryside. Private suites are available on the upper floors with a choice of top quality packages and three or four course menus. The suites accommodate 13 to 200 guests, and The Meyrick and The Montagu packages require a minimum booking of 13. Other dining options include the White Rose Bistro and White Rose Restaurant and there are numerous food and drink outlets around the racecourse.
Wetherby racecourse is just 12 miles from Leeds city centre and 15 miles from York. There is no railway station at Wetherby but there are regular bus services from Leeds, York and Harrogate. A shuttle bus service runs from Wetherby Town centre on selected race days.
Tickets
Tickets for all enclosures can be purchased online in advance or at the turnstiles on the day. General Admission options are the Premier, Paddock or Park and View (Course) Enclosure. Car parking is free at the racecourse but you can book a Park and View ticket, which admits one car and up to five adults to the centre of the course on selected race days, if you specifically wish to take your vehicle into the course.
The Effect of the Draw
There is a slight advantage in being drawn low in sprint races at Wetherby and the course certainly favours runners that like to race prominently. It is very difficult for horses drawn high in large fields.
