Wolverhampton: Yesterday’s Results (Tapeta – Standard)

A competitive evening on Wolverhampton’s Tapeta saw several decisive performances and a number of non-runners. Roxa Love (George Boughey / Rowan Scott) set the tone in the opener by making all to score emphatically, while Lauralynn (Declan Carroll / Zak Wheatley) edged Chianti in a tight finish in the nursery. Odds-on Pon Pon Dalia (Marco Botti / Billy Loughnane) justified favouritism in the Restricted Maiden after Langdale Lass was withdrawn, and Yazoo (Richard Spencer / George Wood) produced a well-timed late move to take the 19:00. Richard Newland’s The Anthony Gover upset the short-priced favourite at 19:30, and Song N Dance (S Woods / Cieren Fallon) led late to take the 20:00. The evening finished with Too Darn Good (Henry Candy / Nicola Currie) prevailing in the 20:30 handicap.

Notable incidents and non-runners

There were several withdrawals and non-runners: Langdale Lass was withdrawn after being upset in the stalls, Ten Sixty Six missed the card (off feed), Snaafy and Evening Fades were also withdrawn (self certificates/off feed), Patricia R declared non-runner/in season, Fiorella Princess was a veterinary certificate withdrawal (in season) and Style King was withdrawn after a problem on scope. These absences had an impact on handicap depths in the later races.

Brief race-by-race highlights

16:57 – Roxa Love confirmed promise, dictating terms and seeing off late pressure. 17:30 – Lauralynn showed determination to deny Chianti by the smallest of margins. 18:00 – After Langdale Lass was withdrawn, Pon Pon Dalia controlled the race at short odds. 19:00 – Yazoo travelled well and produced a bold finish to take the handicap. 19:30 – The Anthony Gover capitalised on a late move to get the better of the favourite. 20:00 – Song N Dance regained the lead close home, while the finale saw Too Darn Good finish strongly to complete a good night for connections.

Overall the Tapeta surface rode true and produced a number of contrasting performances from front-runners and late closers; several withdrawals altered the fields and played a part in how some races developed.

Racecourse Guide

Wolverhampton racecourse has been redeveloped into an exciting leisure venue hosting a remarkable eighty fixtures each year. The Lady Wulfruna Stakes is the most valuable race staged at the course, a fast-track qualifier for the All-Weather Championships. It guarantees the winner a free entry for the £1 million Finals Day.

The course was re-opened as Britain’s first floodlit racecourse in 1994 and now welcomes 120,000 visitors each year. Wolverhampton was also the first Tapeta surface to be used for racing in Europe. The racecourse is left handed and one mile in circumference. It is a very tight, oval track which favours nimble horses which like to race prominently.

Wolverhampton also favours course specialists, notably Stand Guard who won eleven times here and a record 28 times on the all-weather. His career began in 2007, eventually claiming his final victory as a thirteen-year-old ten years’ later.

Dining, Hospitality & Facilities

Wolverhampton boasts an impressive array of facilities. As well as having plentiful bars and restaurants, it also has an onsite hotel and a busy conference and exhibition centre. There are a range of hospitality packages on offer with fantastic views across the track. Wolverhampton’s Horizon Restaurant is set over three tiers of a stunning glass-fronted building while the Ringside Restaurant is a popular 400-seat dining area adjacent to the Parade Ring.

There are frequent trains to Wolverhampton Train Station from London, Birmingham and Manchester. The station is two miles from the track with frequent buses on all race days.

Tickets

Tickets can be booked in advance online, ranging from Grandstand Advance booking to Private Hospitality with the Break Out of the Boardroom package. The Grandstand booking includes access to public parks, eateries and betting outlets with views of the pre-parade ring, parade ring and of course the racing itself. The Private Hospitality packages are for groups of 12 to 32 and include a private suite with balcony views, private bar and afternoon tea.

The Effect of the Draw

Although Wolverhampton is a sharp track with a relatively short home straight, there is no discernible draw bias. If you are concerned about a high draw, you can usually predict where the early pace is likely to come from by studying the traits of your horse’s rivals.
