France World Cup History
France were one of 13 teams to contest the inaugural FIFA World Cup back in 1930, though they exited at the group stage after travelling to Uruguay by ship. They have suffered five further group stage exits in the intervening time, but overall, their status as a footballing giant has been confirmed on the biggest stage.
Their first triumph at the World Cup came when hosting in 1998, which was made more remarkable by them having failed to qualify for the 1990 and 1994 tournaments after finishing third in 1986. An infamous group stage exit followed in 2002 in which, as defending champions, they failed to score a goal.
Sometimes, mutiny has harmed France’s chances, further evidenced when the squad protested against the management during another group stage exit in South Africa in 2010. However, since then, France have gone deep into the tournament, improving upon a quarter-final exit in 2014 to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the go so close to defending their crown only to lose on penalties to Argentina in Qatar in 2022.
How Did France do at the Last World Cup?
As defending champions, France took a while to warm up at the 2022 World Cup, but improved significantly to reach back-to-back finals. They lost on penalties as Argentina dethroned them.
France World Cup 2026 Prediction
France’s relatively tough group stage draw could ensure that progression to the later stages is more difficult than in recent World Cups. Ultimately, an exit in the quarter finals looks a fair prediction from the bookmakers.
