Matty Sutcliffe’s Kim Muir Tips

17:20 Rosconn Group Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

Matty Sutcliffe is hoping that Jeriko Du Reponet is now well-handicapped. He believes this race has been a long-term target and the fact he just about qualifies at the top of the ratings is a plus.

Joe Napier’s Kim Muir Tips

Joe Napier also agrees that Jeriko Du Reponet can win the last on day 3. He is Derek O’Connor’s pick among the JP McManus-owned contingent and could have too much class.

All About the Kim Muir Challenge Cup in 2027

The Kim Muir Challenge Cup is one of the oldest races at the Festival and is exclusive to amateur jockeys, just like the National Hunt Chase and Hunter Chase.

Jeriko Du Reponet and Waterford Whispers are two contenders that will be carrying the silks of JP McManus and the pair are prominent in the betting. Herakles Westwood is another that looks potentially well handicapped and could go close. Kim Roque and Road To Home are another brace of well-fancied challengers.

The Kim Muir Challenge Cup is open to five-year-olds and upwards, and is contested by amateur riders. A strong weight carrying performance seems to be what is required to land the concluding prize on day 3 of the festival, as all but one of the winners since 2009 having carried more than 11st to victory, with the only exception being 2022 winner Chambard.

Top Irish amateur Jamie Codd is normally a man to follow in this event and is the leading jockey in this event, winning the contest four times since 2009. Codd was on board to guide twelve-year-old The Package to success for David Pipe in 2015, who remains only one of two twelve-year-olds to win this event.

Punters have enjoyed success in this amateur riders event as four of the last five winners have come from within the top six of the betting. That being said, favourites have only come out on top once in the last ten years, and an upset is always on the cards – proved in 2022 when Chambard won at a huge 40/1, the second 40/1 winner in the last decade.

Kim Muir Challenge Cup History

The race first took place in 1946 and in its history has only seen two dual winners – Chu-Teh in 1967 and 1968 and Glyde Court, who took the contest in 1985 and 1986. The name of Fulke Walwyn was added to the name of the race after 1991 in memory to the famous and successful trainer who had a staggering 211 victories at Prestbury Park, 40 of those coming at the Cheltenham Festival.

For the first time in its history, only professional riders were allowed to take place in the 2021 renewal due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which prohibited amateur riders from racing at the Festival due to legislation. In the modern era, last time out winning form means very little in this contest as only two of the last 21 winners won on their previous start, although that does include 2022’s shock 40/1 winner Chambard.

Venetia Williams’ Chambard ran out a shock 40/1 winner of the race in 2022
