Sussex Stakes Racecourse

The Sussex Stakes is run at Goodwood Racecourse and is one of the iconic races run during the Glorious Goodwood festival, which takes place during late July and early August and is one of the summer Flat showpieces.

Run over a trip of one mile, the Sussex Stakes is run on Goodwood’s right-handed track and it has one turn after a few furlongs of the contest. With small fields often seen competing in the Sussex Stakes then it’s not a race that will see many have traffic problems and while Goodwood handicaps are renowned for having notable traffic issues on the far side, the Sussex Stakes is usually a fairly run race with the best horse prevailing.

Betting Strategies for the Sussex Stakes

You can have various betting strategies with the Sussex Stakes and being a Group 1 race it can often be a contest that sees some short-priced favourites line up, but here’s a guide on some of the betting strategies you can use.

Each Way

In the last ten years there has only been one running of the Sussex Stakes that has seen ten or more runners head to post, so each-way betting could prove unpopular in the event. Five of the last ten renewals have seen seven or less runners, so there would only be two places in the each way betting, so it could be worth avoiding that market for this Goodwood contest.

Non Runner No Bet

With odds available a long time in advance then some firms could well offer the concession of Non Runner No Bet, but it’s highly unlikely. Trainers have plans for their horses throughout the season, but the Sussex Stakes will not be the only race on the mind of the trainers with the best milers, so there’s unlikely to be much Non Runner No Bet promotions available.

Forecast Betting

The winners in 2022 (Baaeed 1/6 Fav) and 2023 (Paddington 4/9 Fav) meant there could be more attractive value in the forecast betting, where you correctly select the first two horses home in that order. With the race often seeing a strong favourite going to post then the forecast betting will give bigger odds to the punter.

Without the Favourite

Historically, a short-priced favourite has generally prevalent in the Sussex Stakes betting, so the Without The Favourite market is fascinating, as it gives you the chance to disregard the market leader and look elsewhere for some enhanced value.

Are There Any Specific Sussex Stakes Betting Offers?

The Sussex Stakes betting offers will be available here in the lead up to the race at Glorious Goodwood.

Five of the last ten renewals of the Sussex Stakes has seen three-year-olds claim the prize, while in the last decade there have been six winning favourites. A race first run in 1841, the Sussex Stakes has been won by some of the most iconic milers, but the only horse to claim two wins in the race is the mighty Frankel, who won the race as a three-year-old in 2011 before returning 12 months later to retain his crown at 2012.

Frankel’s trainer Sir Henry Cecil is the most successful trainer in the history of the race having saddled the champion on separate occasions, while the legendary Sir Gordon Richards is the jockey with the most wins, as he rode the winner eight times during his illustrious riding career.

It’s a race that often sees the cream rise to the top and in the last ten years and there’s only been one winner who claimed the prize at double-figured odds and that was Here Comes When, who won the 2017 race for Andrew Balding and Jim Crowley at 20/1.
