About Tote

Tote Horse Race Betting Rules
With Tote, there are a variety of ways to bet and they are split into two sections – single-leg and multi-leg bets. So it’s a pretty easy split, essentially single bets and accumulators. As you’ll see below, the single-leg bets are simple enough to explain, but the multi-leg bets are slightly more complicated.
Single-leg Bets
- Win/Place – Backing a horse to win/place
- Exacta – Picking horses to finish 1st and 2nd in a race
- Trifecta – Picking horses to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a race
- Swinger – Picking two horses to finish in the first three places in a race
- Quinella – Picking two horses to finish 1st and 2nd in a race, in either order
Multi-leg Bets
- Placepot – select a horse to win/place in races 1-6 on a selected race card, the stake then goes into a pool, and that final pool is divided between the winners.
- Quadpot – A Quadpot is similar to a Placepot, but where a Placepot is the first 6 races at a meeting, a Quadpot is races 3-6 (4 races in total).
- Jackpot – The Tote Jackpot is a bet where you have to pick the first 6 winners at a meeting nominated by The Tote.
Tote Placepot
The most popular bet at Tote, the Placepot, is a race day ritual for some people and their first port of call when they arrive at the races. To win the Placepot, you need one of your horses to place in each of the first six races at a meeting. You can select as many horses in each race as you wish, but the more you choose, the more lines you have, so the more you have to stake.
Due to the nature and popularity of the bet, the biggest pools are on the biggest race days, generally Saturdays and the big spring festivals. So the Cheltenham Festival, for example, will have some of the largest pools of the year and therefore provides an excellent opportunity for large payouts.
Tote Jackpot
Every day, Tote selects a particular meeting for the Jackpot meeting. To win a share of the pool, you need to pick the winners of the first six races at that meeting. Just like the Placepot, you can select as many horses as you want for each race, but the more you pick, the more lines you will have. Therefore, this is a much more difficult bet to land, but you are rewarded much more handsomely if successful.
Tote Quadpot
Like with the Placepot, you need your horses to place to win a share of the Quadpot. But, this only applies for races three to six at a meeting. So if you get knocked out of the Placepot early but still want to have betting interest for the remaining four races of the Placepot, you can get into the Quadpot anytime before the start of the third race of a meeting.
Tote Scoop6
Taking place every Saturday, the Scoop 6 is another unique bet for punters. You need to pick horses in six nominated races – as with the bets mentioned above, you can choose as many horses as you like, but the more you select, the more lines you have.
However, for the Scoop 6, there are three ways to win. First, if you have the winning horse in every race, you win a dividend from the win fund. If all your horses are placed, you receive the place dividend. Plus, if you win the Scoop 6 win fund, you then have the opportunity to select a horse in a bonus race at a later date – if that selection wins, you also claim a share of the bonus fund.
Tote Cash Out Rules
