The Turners Novices’ Chase is the opening race on Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival. It was introduced in 2011 as the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase and is run over two and a half miles.
Irish trainers have enjoyed massive success in the race since its inception, securing nine victories in the first 13 runnings, though they were beaten to a tenth success by Paul Nicholls’ Stage Star last season.
Trainer Willie Mullins has won the race on four occasions with Sir Des Champs in 2012, Vautour in 2015, Black Hercules in 2016, and Yorkhill in 2017. Mullins could be represented this year by impressive Leopardstown winner Fact To File, or the stablemate he beat that day in Gaelic Warrior.

With Fact To File likely to head to the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, it’s Ginny’s Destiny, who impressed at Cheltenham on Trials Day and Grey Dawning, who both sit at the head of the betting for the Turners Novices’ Chase, which takes place on day three of the meeting.
Both British-trained raiders will face some notable opposition and the likes of Facile Vega, Gaelic Warrior, Iroko and American Mike could all take their chance in the line-up and they are all available at single-figured odds in the betting.
Turners Novices’ Chase Odds and Entries 2024
This year’s Turners Novices’ Chase is dominated latterly by Fact To File, who stamped his authority on the ante-post markets for a couple of races by sauntering home in his match against stablemate Gaelic Warrior at Leopardstown.
However, we are yet to know exactly which race he will be targeted at, with this race and the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase both on his agenda at this stage.
Betting on the Turners Novices’ Chase
The Turners Novices’ Chase, also known as the Golden Miller, is a relatively new race at the Cheltenham Festival. It gives Trainers the option to run their best novices at the meeting without subjecting them to the sometimes gruelling Brown Advisory Chase over three miles. The race was upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2014 and produced one of the most dramatic races of the meeting in 2022.
Galopin Des Champs had the race won when falling at the last fence, leaving market rival Bob Olinger to claim the prize. Galopin Des Champs has won all three subsequent races and is favourite for the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup. His fall was a rare setback for Trainer Willie Mullins who has won this race a record four times, most notably with Vautour in 2015 who returned to Cheltenham to win the 2016 Ryanair Chase.
Irish-trained horses have won nine of the 13 renewals to date and look certain to dominate the Turners Novices Chase betting in 2024. Favourites have only been successful on three occasions but shock results are rare. Benefficient at 20-1 was the only long odds bet on the Turners Novices’ Chase to win when scoring in 2013.
Turners Novices’ Chase News
Irish-trained horses have dominated this race since it was first run in 2011, and it would be a shock if that trend didn’t continue on Thursday. The top three in the betting currently are all trained in Ireland, and it will take a big performance from an outsider in the field to stop one of them from winning.
