Goodwood Day 1 Races On Tuesday

Glorious Goodwood’s day 1 card centres around the Goodwood Cup, a 2m Group 1 which is considered to be one of the biggest prizes in the staying division. This year’s renewal of the race promises to be an enthralling clash between recent Gold Cup winner Kyprios, last year’s Goodwood Cup winner Trueshan, and the four-time Goodwood Cup winner Stradivarius, on what could be the staying legend’s final appearance on the track. As well as the Goodwood Cup, day 1 features the Lennox Stakes, a Group 2 run over a distance of 7f, and six other incredible races.

Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap @ 13:50 

Glorious Goodwood begins with the Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap, this 1m2f contest has a maximum field size of 18 runners and has been a relatively good race for punters in recent years, with three of the last four favourites obliging. Open to horses aged 4yo or older, this has been a good race for 5yo runners in recent renewals, with four of the last six runnings going to runners from that age group.

Japan Racing Association Vintage Stakes @ 14:25 

The first Group race contested at Glorious Goodwood 2022 is the Group 2 Vintage Stakes. This race is run over a distance of 7f and is exclusive to 2yo horses. Generally considered a good trial for the following season’s 2000 Guineas, it is perhaps no surprise that the cream regularly rises to the top here with seven of the last ten favourites winning and no horse bigger than 9/2 scoring during that period. Galileo Gold (2015) is the last horse to win this before following up in the 2000 Guineas a year later.

World Pool Lennox Stakes @ 15:00 

Glorious Goodwood’s Lennox Stakes is generally considered the second biggest race on day 1 after the Goodwood Cup and, being run over a distance of 7f, generally attracts horses either stepping up from sprint distances or dropping back from a mile. Although open to horses aged 3yo+, no horse aged 3 has taken the Lennox Stakes since Garswood back in 2013. Since then, seven of the eight renewals have gone to horses priced at 7/1 or shorter, but there was an almighty shock when 50/1 outsider Breton Rock landed the spoils in 2017. The betting for this year’s Lennox Stakes is currently headed by the William Haggas-trained Sacred, fifth in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes over 6f last time out and a horse currently 2-2 over this 7f trip.

Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes @ 15:35 

The feature race on the first day of Glorious Goodwood is the Goodwood Cup, a 2m Group 1 which has been contested since the 1800s. The race is considered the second of the three-part Stayers’ Triple Crown, following the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and preceding the Doncaster Cup. Stradivarius racked up four straight renewals of the Goodwood Cup before the soft ground resulted in him becoming a late withdrawal 12 months ago, favourite Trueshan taking that renewal. That duo looks set to clash in the 2022 renewal, with the presence of Gold Cup 1-2 Kyprios and Mojo Star adding further weight to what has the potential of being one of the races of the week.

Nicholson Gin Handicap @ 16:10 

The first sprint contested at Glorious Goodwood takes place directly after the Goodwood Cup. This 5f handicap is a 0-105 contest which is open to horses aged 4yo+. This has traditionally been a difficult puzzle for punters, with none of the seven favourites obliging and only two winners priced up shorter than 14/1.

British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes @ 16:45 

This 6f maiden is open to 2yos and generally attracts quite a competitive field. There has been a real spread of winning prices in this contest down the years, with 5/4F Alkumait obliging in 2020, but 100/1 outsider Thechildren’strust causing a major shock when landing the race in 2017.

Coral Beaten-By-A-Length Free Bet Fillies’ Handicap @ 17:20 

This fillies handicap is the penultimate race run on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood. This 1m event is a 0-95 handicap open to horses aged 3yo+. Although it can attract a big field, this tends to be a contest that punters get right, with five of the six winners so far priced up at 15/2 or shorter, the exception during that period going off at 12/1.

World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap @ 17:55 

Glorious Goodwood Day 1 concludes with a 6f 0-95 fillies handicap open to horses aged 3yo+. Lovely Breeze took this race 12 months ago for trainer Hugo Palmer and jockey William Buick, obliging at odds of 3/1.

Goodwood Day 1 Betting Tips

There are many factors that punters should consider before placing any bets at Glorious Goodwood 2022. The ground is generally considered to be an important factor and how a horse has previously handled a slow or fast surface should provide a good insight into how they’ll run at Goodwood. Goodwood doesn’t have an obvious draw bias, with winners coming from different parts of the track, but considering some of the early results of Glorious Goodwood 2022 to see if a bias has developed is useful for the week ahead.
